Matthew Locke (1622-1677) - Consort Music - Phantasm

Recorded at Forde Abbey, Somerset, UK, 1998

Phantasm, a quartet of viols, was founded in 1994. One of the musicians was also a founding member of Fretwork.

    Laurence Dreyfus, Treble Viol/Director
    Wendy Gillespie, Treble Viol
    Jonathan Manson, Treble Viol
    Markku Luolajan-Mikkola, Bass Viol

Matthew Locke's highly inventive, if idiosyncratic, consort music shows the composer at his rebellious best -
presenting somewhat zany experiments in tone colour and instrumental texture that would heavily influence
the young Purcell when he came to pen his own Fantasias. [-Booklet]

    Contents:
Consort of Fower Parts - 24 pieces in 6 suites
    1-4 Suite No. 1 in D minor
    (8'44)
    5-8 Suite No. 2 in D minor/major (7'21)
    9-12 Suite No. 3 in F major (7'30)
    13-16 Suite No. 4 in F major (6'54)
    17-20 Suite No. 5 in G minor (7'57)
    21-24 Suite No. 6 in G major (7'51)
The Flatt Consort, 'for my cousin Kemble'
    25-30 Suite No. 1 in C minor
    (9'33)
