From the excellent WB series "Cuba Classics 3- New Directions In Cuban Music", this album contains 12 original songs from the period 1987-1992 with artists like Irakere, Los Van Van, Carlos Varela and others. You will find a lovely booklet scanned with detailed information about the songs, the artists and the new directions of the Cuban music.
Tell someone that you're going to Cuba next week and they'll say: "Say hi to Fidel for me". Everyone makes the same joke. There are 10 million people in Cuba and we've reduced all to one man. Now is a time of tremendous creativity as well as tremendous suffering in Cuba. You can feel the electricity in the street. A new generation has come of age and is feeling its way as best it can. It's articulate, literate, passionate and fiercy musical. While the previous Luaka Bop collection Cuba Classics 2, emphasized typical Cuban music, this volume stresses discoveries: Irakere inventing beta-rock, Los Van Van adding the trombone-conjunto sound to their synthed-up charanga, Syntesis electrifying centuries-old African melodies, Carlos Varela becoming the poet of Havana. It is also perhaps a selection that few Cubans would have made. Singer-songwriter Pablo Milanes on the same record with Cuban ska-band Los Blues!?
