    Depressive Age was a German Heavy Metal Band from Berlin. The band started in DDR, but they got popular only after the fall of the Wall. First Depression is Depressive Age's debut album.

    Credit where credit’s due. For years people have been worshipping the earth Coroner walked on. And rightfully so. There were but a few thrash metal acts during the late eighties and early nineties daring to stretch the boundaries while still playing catchy thrash metal at the same time instead of falling into groove-desperation. Depressive Age also were such a stretching experimental group.

    Where did Depressive Age go beyond the well know progressive boundaries in 1992? They managed to compress progressive back into songs and from that point on Lubitzki’s vocals just take it all a lot further again. It was good to finally hear a progressive thrash band not using high pitched vocals nor losing grip on compositions because of musical wankery. Not taking the well known Toxik-Think This or Realm-Suiciety paths nor copying ideas tried earlier by acts like Voivod and Coroner but focussing much more on melodies without ever coming close to any form of metal cheesiness.

    The technical hooks, thrash breaks and superb vocal lines on ‘Beyond Illusions’, the epic approach of ‘Autumn Times’, the beauty of ‘Innocent In Detention’ or the catchiness and weirdness of ‘Never Be Blind’, the overdose of melody while still thrashing on ‘No Risk’. Is there no end to this perfection? Sure there is, closer ‘Circles Colour Red’ is just a good song but one would have hoped for a brilliant closing song obviously.

    The album goes through all different kinds of moods, approaches, paces yet always remains a cohesive entity. Which is a remarkable achievement. I never fully understood why Depressive Age is often overlooked and isn’t it about time I helped the world remember their brilliant early albums? Here we go.
