Cowboy and Aliens (quite a silly name actually, but it makes perfectly clear for what they stand for: crusty desertrock with spacetripping psychedelic effect) are probably less diverse, and a bit more focused on pure effective steaming straight away like a roadroller. But with high results! Like John Garcia (Kyuss/Unida), singer Henk V has a same emery paper-voice, and he also use the same vocal techniques like John: just listen to the great uptempo-swingbeater ‘Holy Stone’ to know what I mean. But forget all this irritating comparative knowledge of commodoties, because ‘DAMN!’: what a great groovy fat stoneralbum it is! And I was quite surprised when I saw where C&A came from. Because, they’re from Belgium, and I didn’t know that to the south of the Dutch city Eindhoven (European Epicentre for Stoneheadz) there were human beings that also listen to Black Sabbath, Hawkwind or even the Ozric Tentacles (for the psychedelic parts). I mean, those ‘Red Devils’ are nowadays more the cradle for furious (metal)hardcore or those tedious, artificial faggotpop like Das Pop and Zita Swoon. But maybe thanks to this fat injection by C&A, our Southernbrothers of the land where they used to play good soccer will cause the next rise of smoke metal? With songs like ‘Share The Goods’, ‘Asteroid Blast’ and ‘Cruiser’ I’m really looking forward to meet new ‘Stonehenge Colonies’ from Belgium… To end like a real nagging faultfinder, they get a half point deduction by lack of explorationdrifts to new deserts or other dusty, desolated un-Kyussed waste-grounds. But the energy, the enthusiasm, the grooves and the old cliché ‘it’s better to steal good, than to write bad’ that drips from this album makes it all really worthwile. So forget Nebula, Karma To Burn, Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, Atomic Bitchwax, Leadfoot, Orange Goblin, but remember from now one Cowboys And Aliens as the real heir apparents of Kyuss? All right, in all my idolised enthusiasm I almost forgot Unida…, but anyway, I guess you’ll understand that I’m quite pleased by this cd… My new year resolution is clear: checking the gigs-lists for a new chance to see this band!
