Burhan Öçal is a Turkish music specialist, multi-instrumentalist and composer. He is recognized worldwide as a virtuosic percussionist specializing in a variety of percussion instruments, interested in combining many genres and cultural traditions, such as Free funk jazz and Western classical music, with his own.
Pete Namlook (born 1960 as Peter Kuhlmann, in Frankfurt, Germany) is an ambient and electronic-music producer and composer. In 1992, he founded the German record label FAX +49-69/450464, which he oversees. Inspired by the music of Eberhard Weber, Miles Davis, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chopin, Wendy Carlos, Tangerine Dream and Pink Floyd, he also composes his own albums.
"Sultan" is a creation of two important musicians, a collaboration of Burhan Öçal and Pete Namlook. "Sultan" begins with the melancholic makam "hüzzam". Following the intro, which makes you feel the mysteries of the East, the increasing influence of the East and tradition with the join of oud, tanbur, saz, and percussions meet the Western sounds processed by synthesiser, keyboard and effects. The synthesis of acoustic instruments with electronic music, of the East with the West and of tradition with the future feels itself in the emotional and musical expression.

The most important future of "Sultan" is the usage of traditional instruments without losing their authentic futures and the preparation of the traditional Turkish music to the future by using the facilities of today's technology. It is perhaps possible to name this musical attitude as "future music". Nevertheless, according to Burhan Öçal, the sound should be regarded peculiar to itself and name itself, too.
