Blackfoot were contemporaries of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and tried for years to make it as a Southern rock band, although they finally succeeded as a hard rock outfit, in the manner of AC/DC and the Scorpions. After Lynyrd Skynyrd hit it big right with their classic 1973 debut, the floodgates opened for other young Southern rock bands, such as the Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, and of course, Blackfoot. Blackfoot singer/guitarist/leader Rickey Medlocke was actually an early member of Skynyrd, but skipped out on Ronnie Van Zant and his crew well before their aforementioned debut. Although Blackfoot never hit it as big as Skynyrd, it appeared for a brief time as if the band would fill the void left by the latter's tragic demise in 1977. The group started out as a quartet: singer/guitarist Rickey Medlocke, the grandson of bluegrass musician Shorty Medlocke, who wrote "Train, Train"; drummer/singer Jakson Spires, bassist/singer Greg T. Walker, and lead guitarist Charlie Hargrett. They were signed to Island Records in 1975, evidently as that label's resident Southern rockers, but moved to Epic Records the following year… A fine place to start is the 1994 18-track compilation, "Rattlesnake Rock 'N' Roll".

Southern rock's last great gasp is spelled out on this 18-track compilation. Wisely leaving off anything from the weak albums (No Reservations, Siogo, Vertical Smiles, and Rick Medlocke & Blackfoot) and cherry-picking from the rest of Blackfoot's output, this slims the group's best down to a nice solid chunk of heavy twin Southern rock guitars, macho lyrics, and thundering drumbeats. While some naysayers will point to the group's "Highway Song" as being little more than a spirited "Free Bird" knockoff, the guitar interplay between Medlocke and Charlie Hargrett is well worth the listen. Other highlights include "Train Train", "Left Turn on a Red Light", and a cover of Free's "Wishing Well". Another special bonus is three tracks from Highway Song Live, a U.K.-only release that clearly illustrates what a potent live combination the original quartet truly was.
