Bao Yuankai (b. 1944), is one of China's most popular and respected contemporary composers. His Third Symphony, "Beijing Opera" adapts the western late-Romantic symphonic form into a quartet of sketches of the four main characters of Chinese opera: Jing, the Painted Face character; Chou, the Clown; Dan, the female lead and Sheng, the male lead. The standard symphony orchestra is augmented with a large number of traditional Chinese percussion instruments – adding additional local color to his creative score. While Bao's music tends towards the more conservative aspects of Chinese music, his gift for melody, and imaginative orchestrations - to say nothing of the prestige and celebrity he enjoys at home - provide valuable insight into the history of China's still-young symphonic tradition.

During the last century, many valuable musical works were created in many different styles, and Chinese music composition has gradually formed a distinctive national style. Since the 1980s, there has been considerable progress in Chinese music, and the composers have created a number of distinctive and colorful masterpieces, which in turn have further influenced the development of Chinese orchestral music. In order to reflect the achievements and development of contemporary Chinese music, the People's Music Publishing House has decided to publish The Repertoiry of Chinese Contemporary Composers.
The Repertory will publish outstanding works by contemporary Chinese composers, representative of various genres of orchestral music. All of these works have been performed in concerts at home and abroad to great acclaim. Each of these publications will try to present the most representative works and successful explorations from among the many grand musical compositions that have been produced.
