In 1972, Mike and Lal Waterson released an extraordinary album of their original songs, Bright Phoebus. This magical collection of very English songwriting has long been acknowledged a classic and one of the finest achievements of the British folk revival. Shining Bright was conceived to pay tribute to Mike & Lal's remarkable songs, and it draws upon the songs recorded for Bright Phoebus, and on a further dozen songs written at the same time but not previously recorded. Features 15 tracks performed by Norma Waterson, Dayteller, Maddy Prior, Richard Thompson, Eliza Carthy, Blue Murder, Dick Gaughan, Linda & Teddy Thompson, Helen Watson, Billy Bragg & The Blokes, Martin Carthy, Christine Collister & others.
In the 1960s, the Watersons carved out a reputation as England's premiere traditional folk family. It was somewhat of a shock, then, when brother and sister Mike and Lal Waterson recorded Bright Phoebus in 1972. The album departed from strict traditionalism by using all original material and by incorporating folk-rock musicians like Richard Thompson and Martin Carthy. In 2002, 30 years later, a number of England's finest singers have gathered to pay tribute to the songs that Mike and Lal Waterson wrote during this period. An incredibly eclectic disc, Shining Bright has been assembled from 15 different sessions. Many of the results are stunning. Maddy Prior's vocals on "Winifer Odd" are bolstered by a bouncy acoustic guitar, an atmospheric bass, and multi-tracked harmony, while Helen Watson and Heather Greenbank's version of "Shine" receives an equally attractive arrangement. The standout track among many fine tracks is Linda and Teddy Thompson's take on "Evona Darling." Teddy Thompson's vocal is achingly beautiful and melds flawlessly with his mother's. There's also an interesting bit of accordion and B-3 organ added to the track courtesy of Van Dyke Parks. Another nicely done piece is Norma Waterson's (Mike and Lal's sister) rendition of "Song for Thirza." Waterson's voice seems to just keep getting better and better, and her reading of this emotionally bare lyric is stately. Shining Bright finally serves two purposes: first, to remind younger listeners of the talented pair who made Bright Phoebus, and next, to showcase a number of Britain's best and brightest folksingers. If Shining Bright sounds like a roll call for the British folk music fraternity, that only reflects the pedigree of the artists who this album was made in tribute to. Three decades after Mike and Lal Waterson released their ground-breaking cult album Bright Phoebus, and four years after Lal's untimely death, this collection celebrates their music. Shining Bright resurrects many of the songs on the original album, along with several others written in the same fruitful era. The Waterson family is of course well represented, with Norma and her husband Martin Carthy as well as their daughter Eliza and her band, plus Lal's son Oliver Knight. Non-members of English folk music's most famous dynasty include Billy Bragg, Maddy Prior, Linda and Richard Thompson (no, not on the same track!), Blue Murder and Christy Moore. The arrangements are as varied as the personnel, ranging from Dick Gaughan's minimal guitar and voice to John Pashley's Phoenix New Orleans Parade band. In between there are rowdy folk rock-outs, a string quintet and even an oud. As on any tribute album, even if not all the voices have equal appeal, what really shines through is the wistful leftfield folk poetry of Lal Waterson, whose death robbed British folk of one of its darkest horses.Review by Jon Lusk
