Sacred cantatas formed an integral part of the Lutheran liturgy in Leipzig. Their texts were usually related to the appointed Gospel, and they were sung after its reading, before the sermon. As its Thomaskantor, Bach himself would have customarily directed the choir and instrumentalists, probably not from the organ, which would have been played by the regular organist, but perhaps, on occasion, from the harpsichord. The celebrated and much-loved chorale 'Jesu bleibet meine Freude', affectionately known as 'Jesus, joy of Man's Desiring', comes from the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (BWV 147), which Bach first performed at Leipzig on the Feast of the Visitation (2 July) in 1723. He had already performed a shorter version of the work in 1716 while employed as Konzertmeister at the Weimar court. …
