This 1995 symphony represents in an important way a stylistic departure for Sumera: It uses aleatoric procedures as an important element. (Aleatoric music, sometimes described as "chance music" means that some of the choices usually controlled by a composer are left to random or chance factors, or to the individual simultaneous choices of the players. In the case of this symphony, Sumera's system of aleatoric music is very logical and is subordinated to a strong musical sense of emotion, which is quite striking. The main motive of the symphony is announced on orchestral bells, playing a motive that derives from a basic tone-row used in the symphony. Rhythms pile up. The feeling of the opening motive is questioning, and the question remains unanswered throughout the movement. To tied the ensemble together and give the audience a point of reference, the symphony has a very clear metrical pulse. The symphony contrasts sections of quiet, static music (with a sense of gathering forces held in check) with explosive releases of those forces.
