Mind Revolution is without a doubt the hardest Skyfire release to categorize. The orchestral sections that headlined their preceding LP have been all but removed in light of more simplistic keyboard leads. This change of pace allows the guitars to step to the forefront and ultimately changes the band's entire sound. Whether or not this is a good thing is left up to the listener. Every track is extremely solid (although there are no absolute standouts over the rest); whilst they average out to around 5 minutes a piece, preserving accessibility. The lineup switch to Joakin Jonsson on drums was a wise move. His colorful playing supplements the overall epic sound the band conveys so well. The guitars maintain the trademark Skyfire sound, with plenty of entrancing melodies and even some thrashers thrown in, such as "Caged". The bass is always buzzing around in the background but ultimately fails to break any new ground. Wenngren's vocals are fully realized for the first time on this release, setting the band apart from the hundreds of supposed "Bodom clones". Production has taken a huge step forward. Timeless Departure suffered from an unbalanced sound, with the keyboards and the overly bassy rhythm guitar too high in the mix and the vocals nearly inaudible at times. Mind Revolution has smoothed out nearly all of those wrinkles. The production is crisp and harsh, fitting the music perfectly. The shift in playing style results in a more mystical, almost futuristic sound. This contrasts greatly with the straight up epic sound of Timeless Departure. Fans of melodic death cannot afford to miss Skyfire, and Mind Revolution is a great place to start.
