    D. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 8 - Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, Yevgeny Mravinsky

As would be expected of this conductor, Yevgeny Mravinksy leads a highly intense reading of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8. The tension is apparent right at the start of the first movement, where the strings sound unyieldingly grim, and from there it builds steadily to the great climax, which Mravinsky makes especially bleak. A similar bleakness informs the gloomy Largo, and it's remarkable how Mravinsky creates a strong contrast as he renders the Finale's opening with such sunny lightness. The Allegretto third movement is uniquely gripping thanks to the Leningrad Philharmonic's slashing, rhythmically exact string playing. Indeed, the orchestra is on top form throughout. The original 1982 Melodiya recording was made live in a very spacious acoustic and consequently needs a volume boost for its full impact–something you'll definitely want to experience when listening to this great performance. Available "on demand" from Arkivmusic.com. So demand. [1/30/2007]
