Beethoven: Diabelli Variations [HMA1905127] Friedrich Gulda
    Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/179MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com

    Indomitable flair!

The demiurgic body of 33 variations Op. 120, best known as Diabellli Variations constitutes an admirable effort of expansion, vastness and dissolution. In spite of the harmonic scheme of the Waltz is maintained, the expected relationship with the original theme is extremely distant. Every variation by itself is a true micro cosmos within a major universe.

The Farewell taste of this work is so wounding, with that contemplative gaze of the wisdom, loaded of expressive introspection and sense of sidereal ambition. Beethoven gives the back to man and focuses his attention on the universe. A visible attempt to emulate to his own the monumental Goldberg Variations. Under this perspective I guess while a special work is more introspective, there is a major number of approach ways. The certain of the case is this work is the peak of he counterpoint in any previous work of Beethoven.

There is a visible absence of resolution and will so typical of his intermediate stage, though we must acknowledge the absolute wholeness of the work. Gulda made an admirable reading of this sublime and expansive Opus. But Gulda was in his seventy one and this circumstance seems to accent with major emphasis of the dissolution of the singularity.

Go for this album, because it is one the most rewarding performances of Friedrich Gulda ever made.

Chants de l'Eglise de Rome, Vepres du jour de Paques [HMA1951604] Marcel Pérès & Ensemble Organum
    Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 1CD/344MB | Covers+Tracklist | RS.com

The chant that reigned in Europe for 12 centuries.

When in the middle of the 8th century, on the initiative of Pepin the Short, the heathen Franks took up relations with the Papacy in Rome, they were so impressed by the Roman liturgy – the most exalted expression of the type of civilization they desired to promote – that they transmitted their enthusiasm to the whole of the Western world. It was thus that for twelve centuries the chant of the Church of Rome was to remain the standard liturgical practice. In this regard the Easter Vespers are particularly fascinating, both in the solemnity of their procedure and in the extraordinary fullness of their chants.

Sumer is icumen in [HMA1951154] The Hilliard Ensemble
    Classical | EAC APE+CUE | 1CD/206MB | Small Front Cover | RS.com

The Hilliard Ensemble reliably provides a high quality performance; this album is no exception. This collection provides a variety of styles belonging to a rather narrow timeframe. Highlights include:
"Sumer is icumen in" is well known both as music and as poetry. The version from about 1240 is a round - four voices for the round, two as drones. An absolutely delightful, boisterous number.

"Valde mane diluculo" is a 14th century motet, according to the liner notes a specifically English motet that features multiple voices on the same word(s).

"Edi be thu" is a duet from the late 13th century with heavy use of thirds - this harmony creates a sound very familar to our ears.

The three songs of St. Godric (died 1170) were given to him in dreams - not unlike the origin of many Shaker tunes. The first was given him by the Blessed Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, the second by two angels and the last he sang with St. Nicholas (aka Santa Claus).

"Stond wel moder" is a 13th century crucifix lament, a sequence. This is not a chant, rather the music is written to the syllabic structure of the text. This album introduced me to the genre - one I know wish to explore.

The remaining tracks are as varied. For a historical overview of English music of this period this cd is without equal.
