    The German Baroque cantata is not music I am typically attracted to, even from the pen of its greatest exponent, J. S. Bach. Thus, when the editor sent this recording to me, I wondered if he were trying to expand my horizons or perhaps had made a mistake. But I decided to listen before deciding whether I would attempt to review it or return it for reassignment.
    In the end, I was entirely captivated by the works on this disc. The music shows the influence of Italian music on German composers of the 17th century. The five cantatas, interspersed with instrumental works, by a representative sampling of composers from different areas of Germany and Austria, are unfailingly melodic and attractive. Some of the composers are familiar to me from recordings of their instrumental music, but I was making the acquaintance of several of them for the first time on this disc. The notes to this recording state that a violinist was generally available to organists entrusted with church music, and this accounts for the availability of works such as those presented here.
    The performances are excellent. Peter Kooij is well represented in the catalog from his recordings of Bach cantatas, among other works. I was previously acquainted with his very good portrayal of Hercules on Naxos’s recording of that Handel oratorio. CordArte, consisting of violin, viola da gamba, and keyboard (organ and harpsichord), is another of the many talented period-instrument groups currently before the public.
    This disc surprised me. It contains attractive music beautifully performed. – Ron Salemi
