Enchanted is the sixth studio album by the British singer/songwriter Marc Almond. It was released on 7 August 1990 and reached number 52 on the UK Albums Chart.
Almond is an underrated songwriter. He writes pieces that are well-crafted songs with catchy melodies and intelligent, though sometimes contrived lyrics. As evinced by the titles of the songs on this CD, his subject-matter ranges from the sea and the moon to toreadors, death, Orpheus and the outcast. There is a mix of continental blends on this disc, sometimes French, sometimes Latino, with a mix of jazz thrown in for good measure. Thus the album opens with the sound of the flugelhorn, whilst accordions, flamenco guitar, and dramatic strings feature here and there. There are some excellent arrangements, for example in `A Lover Spurned' and `Orpheus in Red Velvet'.
There are only two duff tracks on the album: `Toreador in the Rain' is too simple and repetitive that it annoys, whilst its sequitur, `Widow Weeds', is too long and repetitive. Of the remaining eight tracks, six are strong, including the singalong-o-death of `Deaths [sic] Diary' and the "burlesque and blue" of `Carnival of Life'. That leaves two songs that are simply outstanding - and I carry no torch here for Mr Almond, as this is only the second CD of his that I have purchased. (Although I was a big fan of Soft Cell in the 80s.) The first of these two five-star songs is `Waifs and Strays' where a fantastically good solid beat is brushed with shimmering washes of sound. But the best of the pack is `A Lover Spurned', whose feel would be perfect for a James Bond opening song. Here Almond can hold his head up high against those who say he simply cannot sing.
So, I was quite impressed with this CD, and might now consider purchasing another by Mr Almond.Review by Nicholas Casley, Amazon.co.uk
Enchanted is one of those rare albums that you put on and can't wait to hear the next track. Ok, the instrumentation is a bit dated (lots of eighties electronics) but all the songs are original and, needless to say, entertaining. This was the first Marc Almond album I bought, and as a result, bought all the others! My personal favourites are Toreador in the Rain, Deaths Diary, Widow Weeds, The Sea Still Sings and Desperate Hours. It all sounds a bit like the 'ethnic' Eurovision entries with Flamenco Guitars and Claps - simply fantastic! So nice to see this one re-issued at long last. My only disappointment is the lack of any bonus material (you need to get 'Treasure Box' for that) and I am not convinced that this, or the other Parlophone albums has been re-mastered, but simply re-issued (which could explain the lack of bonus material).Review by Mr. Peter E.
