Astor Piazzolla belongs to Buenos Aires and to the whole world as well. His music has that secret, that intangible charm and that dose of magic it takes to fascinate musicians and non-musicians alike, whatever their own styles and wherever they come from.

His sharply-accented melodies and his lively, persistent rhythms with their ferocious attacks capture you and sweep you along. Then suddenly all that sonic aggression calms down in a slow section and his lyricism, his inexorable melodies, hit you inside. It's the tango, and it goes straight to the soul.

Piazzolla said, "First music, then the tango. Until at last I came to my true love: chamber music." I should say that to some extent my own path went the opposite way: first came a fascination with his suite Cinco piezas for guitar (Campero, Romántico, Acentuado, Tristón y Compadre); then, in the Quintet, I discovered his aesthetic identity, rooted in the tango of old and in his store of knowledge; and then, through works such as Estaciones porteñas. las Series del diablo and del ángel…, I began to love the tango: the unmistakable Piazzolla sound that is still there in all his musical ventures, from jazz to the fugue.

As a guitarist, I approached Piazzolla's work by making the arrangements brought together on this CD: it was painstaking work, keeping the composer's originals settings and his own recordings in mind all the time. Yet I let myself be guided above all else by that deeply urban and communicative emotion of his melody. What I am seeking to do now is to convey that.
