One of the presumably unfixable problems in the classical recording industry is that the lesser-known works and composers receive the least marketing attention. So a recording, even a pretty good one, of sacred songs by 16th-century composer Balduin Hoyoul is likely to go totally unnoticed, buried in the early music bins of a handful of classical CD stores. It’s particularly unfortunate in this case, because the music, a collection of 20 motets (17 are performed here) titled Sacrae cantiones, is of a consistently superior quality, reaching its peak in the later works in six parts. Hoyoul studied with no less a master than Lassus, whose fluid contrapuntal style obviously rubbed off–and during his years at the court in Stuttgart Hoyoul solidified his craft and refined his technique to a point where his music can take a place among the best second-tier vocal works of the period. The eight male voices of Ensemble Hofkapelle show real enthusiasm for this music even if their sound isn’t quite as polished, their intonation as precise, or their blend as warm as we’ve become accustomed to with groups such as the Hilliard Ensemble. There are many high points, however, and especially in the six-part works, the singers’ command of the music and rich, vibrant sound is very impressive. Sadly, few listeners will be able to find discs such as this one, or if they do, usually won’t have a clue about whether they might want to listen to it or buy it. So, the discs sit unsold, giving many classical record companies or their distributors an excuse to continue to refuse to promote or even make such recordings because they “don’t sell”–a case of ” classical catch-22″, a condition you can help counter by giving this disc and others like it a serious listen.
