    Seven years after they've released their last industrial/EBM album of the 1980's, they released I, which featured a different direction than their previous albums- as metal influenced were introduced to the band's sound alongside the typical EBM, and it provides the turning point of the band from an EBM band into an industrial metal one.

    A combination of EBM and metal doesn't sound that great, and many metalheads will avoid this album because of this label- but as a fan of the latter and not the first I can say that this combination works perfectly. I features music that could be headbanged to, but is also very danceable at the same time. The songs feature more EBM than metal- but some have very prominent riffing in them which adds a lot to the mechanical atmosphere of the album- with the most notable example being the song Metal Machine Music- featuring very groovy riffs along with the driving electronic beats. There aren't sections like that on the album, which is a pity (because they could've been really great too) but the rest of the tracks cover that fact up by having some really great EBM sections and by just being really good. Take the song Ministry of Fear for example- it's a pure electronic track, but its gothic aesthetic and dark vibe will appeal to a wide range of metal fans- especially gothic, industrial, and even black and doom.

    Variety is a key feature in this album. Take the Depeche Modey Disciples of Discipline, or the Metallica cover of One (which is an almost pure electronic track, but doesn't fall in quality from the original)- none of the songs here sound the same. Whether it's the riffing which is either played by the band's frontman Jürgen Engler or Accuser's axemen, or the different synth sounds and speech parts used in the album, every moment of it will not sound same to each other. The lyrics are very unusual for an EBM band, consisting mainly of industrial city life or socio-political issues, and aren't broken like the lyrics of many German bands of that time:

    Target of infiltration
    Last try to break the code" (High Tech/ Low Life)

    Production-wise, this album is pretty decent. Although the mix of the guitars is different from each track, it is pretty balanced- especially in the synth/vocal manner. The most probable reason for that could be that the band wanted to emphasize different sections (such as the guitar overshadowing the electronic parts in Rings of Steel or vice versa in The Dawning of Doom), which seems like a very witty and smart decision. Very recommended.
