This set has floated around in bootleg form for a while now, but this is the first "legitimate" release of this gig. It features Crosby -guitar/vocals, Jerry Garcia-guitar/vocals. Phil Lesh-bass, and (according to some Dead followers) either Hart or Kreutzmann on drums. The sound is pretty fair–think pretty good bootleg quality. It's a bit flat and you need to adjust the volume up a bit. The eight tracks are almost all fairly lengthy, giving the band (especially Garcia) a chance to really get into the music. The booklet has pieces of an interview from Rolling Stone from 1970.
Recorded before the release of Crosby's album, "If I Could Only Remember My Name", this set comes from a short stint at the Matrix in S.F. in 1970. The tapes may be dated inaccurately because the Matrix folks (who taped many sets) didn't keep real accurate records on the tape boxes.
But that doesn't really matter–it's the music that's important–and in that respect this is a pretty nice set of tunes well played for the most part. Crosby is in good voice, especially on songs like "Cowboy Movie", "Triad", and Laughing". The band too helps give these tunes a good period feel of those times. Garcia takes over on Dead staples "Bertha" and "Deep Elem Blues", and the foursome are pretty tight all through these tunes. I have to say that both Crosby and Garcia's guitars are a treat to hear together on this set. And with The Dead rhythm section, there's a real organic feel to the music–again redolent of the era.
Here are a few highlights–"Drop Down Mama"-some hot guitar work with a typically good Crosby vocal. "Cowboy Movie"–slowly unwinds with more good electric guitar punctuating Crosby's vocal, a nice version of this tune. "Triad"–a beauty, Crosby's smooth vocals pour down like honey, if the recording quality were better this would be a stunner. "The Wall Song"–very subtle performance with the band laying back effectively, listen to the bass work here. "Bertha"–a nice, chugging version with Garcia on vocals, in the context of The Dead a curiosity worth hearing. "Deep Elem Blues"–good Crosby/Garcia guitars, Garcia again on vocals, similar in feel to "Bertha", listen to the mid-tempo guitar solo. "Motherless Children"–very open beginning with Crosby's wordless vocal and builds from there, Garcia holds his guitar in check until he unleashes a gripping solo, and ending the way it began. "Laughing"–a good preview of Crosby's solo album, a sensitive arrangement, there's a slight feeling of menace in this song.
For fans of Crosby and his first solo album and/or Garcia this is worth picking up. The songs are well played (for the most part) and the vocals are straight from that whole cool period during the sessions for Crosby's album and all his friends who dropped by to play. It's nice to hear Crosby working through his songs in front of a relatively small audience, and Garcia on The Dead tunes that stayed in the band's repertoire for a long time. In some ways this is reminiscent of "The Ferro Tapes"–that same kind of vibe–of musicians feeling their way into and through the songs.By Stuart Jefferson, AMG
