It has been 45 years since the release of Fire – the song we all know and love him for – hurtled to the top of the charts, but Arthur Brown is far from slowing down as time goes on. 2014 saw the release of his latest album Zim Zam Zim; the result of a popular pledge campaign that has helped to create a triumphant musical masterpiece that is everything you could hope to hear from Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
The album opens with the gloriously odd chanting title track Zim Zam Zim which is needless to say, a perfect introduction to his own personal brand of blues-rock music. Inside just a few short tracks you can still hear his influence in so much of our popular music over the last 45 years. Listening back you can hear it in everything from Tom Waits to Alive Cooper. With Zim Zam Zim he continues leading by example of exactly what music should be.
Brown doesn’t shy away from anything in his music be it sound or subject – he simply brings whatever he wants to the table as long as it works. Want to Love, the second track is a startling yet tremendous song with one of the most catchy melodies on the whole album; it just happens to be about the after-effects of child abuse. It’s by no means a comfortable song but if you like the Crazy World of Arthur Brown then you’ll love it for these abruptions too. It’s a dark yet vehemently inspiring song about overcoming hardships and love. His lyrics have the power to cut deep into your soul in one sentence and in the next ebb through you like evocative poetry.
Musically, Zim Zam Zim is completely and utterly madcap. It’s a stunning cacophony of sounds that only Arthur Brown could have ever fashioned into such wonderful music. Animal cries, buzzing insects, bold brass, shivering synthesizers and rumbling tribal beats all mix together with electric guitars and the gentle touch of the piano to bring us a mixed bag of songs that make the word ‘eccentricity’ seem painfully dull in comparison. Jungle Fever is a prime example of this as it centers on Brown’s incredible vocals and discordant plucked strings to bring you an old fashioned blues tune, although you’re also steadily aware of the varying accompanying animal sounds throughout.
Topping all of this musical and lyrical prowess off is Brown’s inimitable vocal talents. His deep, gravely voice pierces the air with words leaden with anchors. As each word leaves his mouth it hangs heavy in the air allowing his ideas to swirl and form fully in your mind before they dissipate to introduce the next one. Allowing his lyrics to roll through your mind is nothing short of a whirlwind tour of his own personal art exhibition. His lyrics are enigmatic, entertaining and touching in places and his closing track The Formless Depths is a deeply poetic and powerful song that seems more of a reading than a song.
Zim Zam Zim is a carnival of sound that collects together every instrument you could think of and probably several that you can’t, and ties them all together into an eccentricity that’s completely and utterly unmissable. Inspiring, riling and beguiling, Zim Zam Zim is proof that Arthur Brown is still at the top of his game after 45 years.~Artee
