Greyscale is the upcoming eighth studio album from German synthpop band "Camouflage", due to be released on 6 March 2015 in Germany and 27 March 2015 in the rest of the world. It is the band's first studio album in nine years, following 2006's "Relocated".

Ever since I first started listening to music, I've always tried to find what I called "clones" of my favorite artists and bands. Back in the day, it was Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd sound-alikes, then it was Van Halen (pretty much any hair-band with a hot guitarist worked for me in those days) - then when I got into The Cure and Depeche Mode, I started finding those "tributes" (the Cure "sound" apparently harder to appropriate than Depeche, as there seem to be fewer Robert Smiths out there). That's when I found several excellent 'facsimiles' that generally exist under the term "synthpop" - lots of them around, actually, from IRIS and Michigan, to De/Vision and Camouflage. Germany's Camouflage, however, have had a career nearly as long as Depeche, even landing a minor hit back in 1989 with 'The Great Commandment' - and at their best, sound uncannily like the Basildon boys, replete with Gahan-like vocals and lots of minor-key synth arrangements, at once dark AND poppy, just like my heroes! The zenith of their clone-dom, however, would have to be 2003's "Sensor", at times almost a note-for-note "recreation" of DM's "Ultra". Their last album, 2006's "Relocated " was a bit more band-centric this time around, often "in the Mode" but the band was creative enough with their own talents and writing abilities to at least not sound like any DM album in particular. Nine years have passed now and we have "Greyscale", and what is probably their most mature and complete album yet. Still synthpop, still the echo of Depeche (mostly in the vocals of Marcus Meyn, who can at once sound like a combination of both Gahan and Martin Gore, but apparently, only when he wants to!). And the term "pop" may be a bit of a misnomer here, as this is a more understated and moody affair, mellower overall, and very much the work of a band who has been making this kind of music for nearly thirty years, and have now nailed it.. Great comeback. In fact, I wish Depeche themselves would simply stop their own recent experimentations and just release an album based on their greatest strengths. After all, one of their clones have!
