Neoclassic Power Metal

At Vance, one of Germany's most consistently satisfying metal bands was formed by vocalist Oliver Hartmann (Centers, Avantasia, Heavenly, Dreamscape, Freedom Call, Edguy) and guitarist Olaf Lenk (Velvet Viper, Zed Yago, Wolfpakk, Seven Thorns) in 1998. Once again ready to show their affinity for amazing guitar work, At Vance have released this their 7th studio CD (naturally) and the follow to 2005's "Chained," on the outstanding Locomotive label. A melodic power metal CD, here guitars and keyboards lay an almost symphonic delivery to many of the tracks heard. Vocalist Rick Altzi uses the full power of his vocal prowess to carry these tracks heavenward, and with amazing control swings from baritone to upper tenor. The band does a great job on lending the capabilities of each of their individual instruments to assist Rick in giving these songs lift, by adding volume, intensity, pitch and fervor. It is for those reasons that tracks "Breaking The Night," the CD highlight "Cold As Ice," "Friendly Fire," and "Golden Leaves," work. On "VII" neo-classic meets power metal, and the result is an invitation to reach for the volume knob, and get lost in the melodies.

At Vance is one of the most interesting, and versatile bands within the power metal genre. Taking on, and excellently delivering covers of ABBA, Survivor, Supertramp, Eagles, Tears for Fears, and Rainbow, as well, the works of classic masters Beethoven and Vilvaldi, each of At Vance's CDs is a incredible offering, and a wonder as to what band will At Vance pay homage to next. While no covers are featured on "VII," this is such a fantastic CD nonetheless. The sound is pitch perfect, the songwriting superb, the musicianship first rate. The guitars are incredible, the drums hard hitting, the keyboards lush and loud, and the vocal harmonies just fantastic. What's important is that a band gets what power metal is all about. It's not about playing fast, or even loud. It's a vibe, a hope to bring to the listener a release complete with tracks that flow, and that is played with a true, from the heart desire to give a listener a melodic venture into a world where the music is lush, layered, melodic, and the most important part of it all - played with passion. And on this, At Vance plays with a passion that is instantly recognizable. To prove it, listen to the melodic "Victory," the keyboards of the head banging "Shine," the mid temp "Shiver," the ferocious killer drums of "Truth," and the closing track, the gentle, with it's gorgeous acoustic guitars is "Lost In Your Love."

Oh yeah, this is one of my favorites in my CD collection. For fans of shredding guitars that blend with fantastic keyboards, this is for you. Fans of Thunderstone, Masterplan, Impelleterri, and Iron Mask need to hear this, for At Vance has done it again - they have released a CD that needs to be heard.
