I want to share in this post, again an unforgettable master pianist with you. He plays solo in this album, tracks are selected
by another master pianist; Hank Jones.
Any friend who listened Art Tatum before, sure he/she didn't believe his art. Technically, maybe only some master
concert pianists (on classical music) can be at his level. He impressed a lot, another master pianist "Oscar Peterson"
deeply. In the other hand, years ago I read a jazz magazine, and it writes like that: " Herbie Hancock said in a speaking
as "By harmonically, Art Tatum made as such things that, in today, we couldn't solve some of them ready."
I don't know it's true, but if it's true, we must think twice for me as the year was 1956 when Art Tatum died…
By the way, we use a lot, the term "harmony (in music)". Here, I request a friend, who knows both classical & jazz harmony,
to explain here simply, therefore friends can understand the importance of the "harmony" in jazz music. My expression will be poor and
homeless, although I tried to explain below, for friends who wants to have a quick-knowledge about it.
In major-minor system musics (such as classical, jazz, pop, rock, etc.); there are "chords". Chords are different from the "melody"
Chords, sounds exactly together at the same time, more than two nota's. Chord can be in a jazz pianists left hand,
in a rock guitarist, who plays the rhythm-session (not playing solo), or even in a symphonical orchestra, in strings, etc.

"Harmony" in music is a very huge thing, it becames from centuries ago, from the European Classical Music art, by developing with the great compositors; the simpliest way of "Harmony" is, it is about the rules, relationships, etc. of the "chords" as I mentioned.
For example, lets take a simple song, (tonic: Do-major); a keyboard player in a pop orchestra, wants to voice the Do-major chord;
he plays at the same time "do + mi + sol + do". It's okey, a good voicing for pop-music. But it's a non-acceptable mistake in jazz
music. Lets consider Bill Evans (a great harmonist in jazz), plays the same song, and voices the same chord; the simpliest and
the simpliest voicing for (Do-major) chord, will be like that: "mi + sol + la + re" (in sequence). He added the 6th and the 9th
degree of the chord (la & re), and he passed away the root voice (I mean "Do" nota, because in somewhere in this time, his bassist
played the "do", or gave a reference to the Do-major chord).
As you can see the difference, the first player (pop musician man), used the "Do" nota twice (and the bassist in his orchestra used it
again, it's three times the same nota); but Evans's simpliest voicing is much better than this; he added new degrees to the chord.
It's something like that, more advanced and more complicated harmonies (chords), make jazz "the jazz". Beautiful harmonies,
produces beautiful improvisations in jazz. Every jazz musician, always tries to improve his harmonies, voicings, everyday.
Because of this, "harmony science" is a very important thing in jazz music, if I could explained correctly…
