For five decades, vocalist-composer Meredith Monk has explored non-verbal vocal sound that lay beneath and beyond language. This exploration has led her to create an art that “sings, dances and meditates on timeless forces”. Voices and instruments have equal weight: sometimes each is heard alone; sometimes they are blended to form a new, mysterious sound; sometimes they are combined to create intricate, layered, yet transparent sonic landscapes.

Julie Lyon is at the top of her game as a jazz singer. MOONFLOWER, follow-up to the critically acclaimed JULIE, features original songs and compositions and is in many ways her first solo album. Though accompanied by her band, the focus is not only on Ms. Lyon’s considerable vocal talents but also on her role as lyricist and songwriter. The seeds of MOONFLOWER were sown when Julie began to write lyrics to some of composer Jack DeSalvo’s music. It became obvious that recording this music would be the vocalist’s next project and music by Julie Lyon along with additional collaborations with Tom Cabrera and Betsy Serafin create a tapestry of sophisticated listening experiences with music touching new jazz, folk and world music but always rooted in Julie’s sense of swing and the blues. The title song "Moonflower" is written by multi-instrumentalist/composer Matt Lavelle.

However, she remains dissatisfied with the compartmentalization of her artistic activities and the monolithic place occupied by the singer-songwriter in the music system. Marjolaine Reymond understands that she is not a repertoire singer, nor dedicated to formal composition, but above all a creator and improviser of her own universe. "Demeter No Access" is a polyptych in which various literary allusions are unofficially telescoped.

Trombonist Michael Dease delivers a unifying message about the Jazz diaspora and the impassioned assistance of "All These Hands". The program's message is carefully constructed to provide listeners with a musical narrative about the evolution of the jazz art form as it spread through the different regions and localities of America. To provide assistance in bringing his vision to fruition, Dease assembled an all-star lineup of musicians including trumpeter Etienne Charles, alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Gerald Cannon, and powerhouse drummer Lewis Nash, along with a number of special guests like Rodney Whitaker, Randy Napoleon and Rufus Reid.
