When Gioachino Rossini is mentioned, the mind immediately turns to the inexhaustible melodic brilliance of his operasIl barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola or Guillaume Tell. Far less familiar, however, is the remarkable body of vocal and piano miniatures that accompanied the composer throughout his life.

Giacomo Puccini composed 16 chamber songs for voice and piano over a very long period, from the early 1880s to 1919. These pieces thus virtually follow the evolution of his creative career, from his early neoclassical influences to the more dramatic and passionate atmospheres of his mature period. They are small, refined gems that anticipate and reflect the Maestro's operatic lyricism; indeed, one of the main reasons for interest in these pages lies in their very close relationship with some of the most famous moments in Puccini's melodrama.

This is all too easy to forget, given how dominant the image of Giulini presiding over his orchestra in the great symphonic repertoire has become, but the conductor first cut his teeth in the orchestra pit at La Scala, where he began as Sabata’s assistant before being swiftly promoted to principal conductor. From that era, we are left with legendary recordings of operatic masterpieces featuring Maria Callas or Renata Tebaldi, and memories of those sizzling nights at La Scala, as well as more unexpected works, such as the delightful Serva padrona, Pergolesi’s most famous intermezzo. Two leading figures of the Italian opera scene, Rosanna Carteri and Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, bring out all its verve and mischief

Michele Carafa was a student of Cherubini and formed a lifelong friendship with Rossini based on mutual admiration. Carafa established a career in Paris through his association with the Opéra Comique, which is where he presented his masterpiece Masaniello. Uniquely, Carafa was a descendant of characters in his own opera, which was based on real revolutionary events that took place in Naples in the 17th century. The result is a well-paced historical drama, closer to French operatic models with limited reliance on bel canto and the influence of Rossini.
