SONGHOY BLUES is a band whose experiences in Mali have opened their eyes to universal problems plaguing people everywhere. Using the pain and lessons learned from having to leave their hometowns in northern Mali, the band realizes that human rights is a concept that extends far beyond what they have seen with their own eyes and far beyond just the borders of Mali. In order for the band to see their homes restored, they understand the fight must be fought on all fronts, for everybody across the spectrum. They are no longer refugees or exiles or four people with instruments—they are SONGHOY BLUES, a musical voice for empowerment and equality.

Bessie Jones, John Davis, and the Georgia Sea Island Singers gained wide renown during the 1960s and ‘70s for their powerful performances of traditional songs from the African American Gullah Geechee community on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Most in the group were born and raised on St. Simons, and could trace their ancestry to the enslaved West and Central Africans who worked on the island’s cotton plantations. Throughout the ‘60s, the Georgia Sea Island Singers were prominent voices in the civil rights movement, bringing hundreds of years of Black musical tradition to bear on a pivotal time in American history.

The Piano Quintet in E-flat minor, Op.87, is a composition by the Austrian composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel. Composed in 1802, it was not published until around 1822 and might have served as an example cited by Sylvester Paumgartner who commissioned Hummel’s friend Schubert to write his own piano quintet.

he String Quintet No. 4 in G minor, K. 516, written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is like all of Mozart's string quintets a "viola quintet" in that it is scored for string quartet and an extra viola (i.e., two violins, two violas, and cello). The mood of the piece is dark and melancholic, typical of Mozart's G minor works.

This could be the title which sums up the content of the two live performances contained in this album: the Septet op. 20 (1799-1800) by Ludwig van Beethoven for clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and double bass and the Quintet in B flat major no.2 op. 87 (1845) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. If for Beethoven, this represents a chronological and creative conclusion to his so-called Classical period, in Mendelssohn’s case, we are faced with a work demonstrating his full maturity. And yet, in both cases there is a sense of fluidity and freshness that allows for immediate emotional appreciation and memorability, especially for the non-professional listener.

In composing the Quartet No.1 in G min op.25 for piano and strings (and op.26) - his first truly important chamber works - Brahms - being the fervent classicist that he was - looked back to some important models to emulate and renew, he composed his own diptych of quartets with piano with other significant diptychs of pieces for strings and piano in mind: Mozart's Quartets K 478 and K 493 (Mozart's K 478 and Brahms' op. 25 are both in G min), Beethoven's two Trios op.70, Schubert's two Trios op.99 and 100.
