‘There are works that are like a bridge built across the absolute, an attempt to go beyond Time’. So wrote - signing his name with the initials V.H. - the author of the article that appeared on 1 April 1941 in Le Lumignon, the newspaper of Stalag VIII A in Görlitz, Silesia, the labour camp where Olivier Messiaen was held prisoner, and where, on the frigid 15 January 1941, that masterpiece ‘beyond time’ that is the Quatuor pour la fin du Temps saw the light of day.
