When an iconic pianist like Chick Corea gets together with such modern masters as bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade, perhaps it should come as no surprise that the music they create together is absolutely magical. Their 2014 release Trilogy earned universal acclaim, including a pair of GRAMMY Awards (Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Improvised Jazz Solo for “Fingerprints”), and confirmed the trio as one of Corea’s most revered ensembles.

Essential: a masterpiece of Progressive-Rock music
Since I am not selfish, I want to share this "High tension wires" LP from virtuoso guitarist Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, The Dregs). If I could describe this work comes to me only one word: delicious.

The Dixie Dregs are one of those recording artists who have spread their catalog among competing labels, making a comprehensive compilation difficult to assemble.

John Boorman’s latest film Queen & Country, a sequel to his Oscar-nominated film “Hope and Glory”, was chosen for the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight selection Cannes Film Festival. Set in 1952, Queen & Country stars Caleb Landry Jones as an 18-year-old British man who joins the National Service and meets an amoral prankster who becomes his friend. They are assigned as instructors in a training camp while others are shipped out to fight in the Korean War. The film also stars Pat Short, Sinead Cusack, Callum Turner, David Thewlis and Richard E. Grant. The film is set 10 years after “Hope and Glory” and centres on the same characters.

Some of Franz Schubert’s music – like the Trout Quintet or the Ave Maria – is heard time and again, while other pieces are hardly ever played. Even when the focus is on his chamber music, these extremes are evident. Of all fifteen string quartets, Death and the Maiden is played most, while others are true Cinderellas. Bliss composed The Enchantress in 1951, the year of his sixtieth birthday, for Kathleen Ferrier. The text is a free adaptation of the Second Idyll of Theocritus, made by Henry Reed, and well suited to Bliss’s love of classical Greek authors.

In weaving America’s native culture and history, Philip Glass has created his own musical lineage. This album explores these ideas through his single most demanding piano piece, the ferocious, but lyrically meditative Piano Concerto no.2 (after Lewis and Clark), as well as one of his most neglected, the mysterious A Secret Solo 2. Wichita Vortex Sutra, a joyful and transcendent study, is also heard in the version for narrator, with words by the poet Allen Ginsberg. From his experimental years comes Music in Contrary Motion with its mesmerising variety of pulse patterns.

Reicha and Beethoven were both composers and were both born in the year 1770. They met in Bonn and even played together for several years in Bonn’s orchestra pit. The Concert de la Loge takes the opportunity of their 250th birthday to pay them a tribute, with this recording that brings together Beethoven’s Septet op.20 (for an atypical string quartet with violin, viola, cello and double bass, plus clarinet, horn and bassoon) and Reicha’s Grande Symphonie de Salon no.1 (for string quintet, oboe, clarinet, cor and bassoon). These hybrid works are situated at crossroads between chamber music and symphony and reflect the taste of experimentation of their composers.
