Topics in Quantum Mechanics

Topics in Quantum Mechanics by Floyd Williams
English | PDF | 2003 | 393 Pages | ISBN : 0817643117 | 26.1 MB

Quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are highly successful physical theo ries that have numerous practical applications. Largely mathematical in character, these theories continue to stimulate the imaginations of applied mathematicians and purists as weIl. In recent years, in particular, as a new array of tools have emerged, including a representative amount from the domain of so-called pure mathematics, interest in both the conceptual and physical aspects of these beau tiful subjects has especially blossomed. Given the emergence of newer and of ten spectacular applications of mathematics to quantum theory, and to theoretical physics in general, one notes that certain communication gaps between physicists and mathematicians continue to be bridged. This text on quantum mechanics, designed primarily for mathematics students and researchers, is an attempt to bridge further gaps. Although the mathematical style presented is generally precise, it is counterbalanced at some points by a re laxation of precision, as our overall purpose is to capture the basic fiavor of the subject both formally and intuitively. The approach is one in which we attempt to maintain sensitivity with respect to diverse backgrounds of the readers, including those with modest backgrounds in physics. Thus we have included several con crete computational examples to fortify stated principles, several appendices, and certain basic physical concepts that help to provide for a reasonably self-contained account of the material, especially in the first 11 chapters.

Representations of SU(2,1) in Fourier Term Modules

Representations of SU(2,1) in Fourier Term Modules by Roelof W. Bruggeman , Roberto J. Miatello
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 217 Pages | ISBN : 303143191X | 30 MB

This book studies the modules arising in Fourier expansions of automorphic forms, namely Fourier term modules on SU(2,1), the smallest rank one Lie group with a non-abelian unipotent subgroup. It considers the “abelian” Fourier term modules connected to characters of the maximal unipotent subgroups of SU(2,1), and also the “non-abelian” modules, described via theta functions. A complete description of the submodule structure of all Fourier term modules is given, with a discussion of the consequences for Fourier expansions of automorphic forms, automorphic forms with exponential growth included.

Lie Groups by J. J. Duistermaat , J. A. C. Kolk
English | PDF | 2000 | 352 Pages | ISBN : 3540152938 | 32.1 MB

This book is devoted to an exposition of the theory of finite-dimensional Lie groups and Lie algebras, which is a beautiful and central topic in modern mathematics. At the end of the nineteenth century this theory came to life in the works of Sophus Lie. It had its origins in Lie's idea of applying Galois theory to differential equations and in Klein's "Erlanger Programm" of treat ing symmetry groups as the fundamental objects in geometry. Lie's approach to many problems of analysis and geometry was mainly local, that is, valid in local coordinate systems only. At the beginning of the twentieth century E. Cartan and Weyl began a systematic treatment of the global aspects of Lie's theory. Since then this theory has ramified tremendously and now, as the twentieth century is coming to a close, its concepts and methods pervade mathematics and theoretical physics.

Dynamics of Foliations, Groups and Pseudogroups

Dynamics of Foliations, Groups and Pseudogroups by Paweł Walczak
English | PDF (True) | 2004 | 236 Pages | ISBN : 3764370912 | 20.3 MB

Foliations, groups and pseudogroups are objects which are closely related via the notion of holonomy. In the 1980s they became considered as general dynamical systems. This book deals with their dynamics. Since "dynamics” is a very extensive term, we focus on some of its aspects only. Roughly speaking, we concentrate on notions and results related to different ways of measuring complexity of the systems under consideration. More precisely, we deal with different types of growth, entropies and dimensions of limiting objects. Invented in the 1980s (by E. Ghys, R. Langevin and the author) geometric entropy of a foliation is the principal object of interest among all of them.

Multiscale Multibody Dynamics: Motion Formalism Implementation

Multiscale Multibody Dynamics: Motion Formalism Implementation by Jielong Wang
English | PDF,EPUB | 2023 | 366 Pages | ISBN : 9811984409 | 47.7 MB

This book presents a novel theory of multibody dynamics with distinct features, including unified continuum theory, multiscale modeling technology of multibody system, and motion formalism implementation. All these features together with the introductions of fundamental concepts of vector, dual vector, tensor, dual tensor, recursive descriptions of joints, and the higher-order implicit solvers formulate the scope of the book’s content. In this book, a multibody system is defined as a set consisted of flexible and rigid bodies which are connected by any kinds of joints or constraints to achieve the desired motion. Generally, the motion of multibody system includes the translation and rotation; it is more efficient to describe the motion by using the dual vector or dual tensor directly instead of defining two types of variables, the translation and rotation separately. Furthermore, this book addresses the detail of motion formalism and its finite element implementation of the solid, shell-like, and beam-like structures. It also introduces the fundamental concepts of mechanics, such as the definition of vector, dual vector, tensor, and dual tensor, briefly. Without following the Einstein summation convention, the first- and second-order tensor operations in this book are depicted by linear algebraic operation symbols of row array, column array, and two-dimensional matrix, making these operations easier to understand. In addition, for the integral of governing equations of motion, a set of ordinary differential equations for the finite element-based discrete system, the book discussed the implementation of implicit solvers in detail and introduced the well-developed RADAU IIA algorithms based on post-error estimation to make the contents of the book complete.

Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Representations: An Elementary Introduction by Brian C. Hall
English | PDF (True) | 2015 | 452 Pages | ISBN : 3319134663 | 6.64 MB

This textbook treats Lie groups, Lie algebras and their representations in an elementary but fully rigorous fashion requiring minimal prerequisites. In particular, the theory of matrix Lie groups and their Lie algebras is developed using only linear algebra, and more motivation and intuition for proofs is provided than in most classic texts on the subject.

Probability Measures on Semigroups: Convolution Products, Random Walks and Random Matrices by Göran Högnäs , Arunava Mukherjea
English | PDF | 1995 | 399 Pages | ISBN : N/A | 27.5 MB

A Scientific American article on chaos, see Crutchfield et al. (1986), illus trates a very persuasive example of recurrence. A painting of Henri Poincare, or rather a digitized version of it, is stretched and cut to produce a mildly distorted image of Poincare. The same procedure is applied to the distorted image and the process is repeated over and over again on the successively more and more blurred images. After a dozen repetitions nothing seems to be left of the original portrait. Miraculously, structured images appear briefly as we continue to apply the distortion procedure to successive images. After 241 iterations the original picture reappears, unchanged! Apparently the pixels of the Poincare portrait were moving about in accor dance with a strictly deterministic rule.

Harmonic Analysis on Symmetric Spaces and Applications II by Audrey Terras
English | PDF | 1988 | 395 Pages | ISBN : 0387966633 | 35.1 MB

Well, finally, here it is-the long-promised "Revenge of the Higher Rank Symmetric Spaces and Their Fundamental Domains." When I began work on it in 1977, I would probably have stopped immediately if someone had told me that ten years would pass before I would declare it "finished." Yes, I am declaring it finished-though certainly not perfected. There is a large amount of work going on at the moment as the piles of preprints reach the ceiling. Nevertheless, it is summer and the ocean calls. So I am not going to spend another ten years revising and polishing. But, gentle reader, do send me your corrections and even your preprints. Thanks to your work, there is an Appendix at the end of this volume with corrections to Volume I. I said it all in the Preface to Volume I. So I will try not to repeat myself here. Yes, the "recent trends" mentioned in that Preface are still just as recent.

Complex Analysis and Special Topics in Harmonic Analysis by Carlos A. Berenstein, Roger Gay
English | PDF | 1995 | 491 Pages | ISBN : 1461384478 | 37.3 MB

A companion volume to the text "Complex Variables: An Introduction" by the same authors, this book further develops the theory, continuing to emphasize the role that the Cauchy-Riemann equation plays in modern complex analysis. Topics considered include: Boundary values of holomorphic functions in the sense of distributions; interpolation problems and ideal theory in algebras of entire functions with growth conditions; exponential polynomials; the G transform and the unifying role it plays in complex analysis and transcendental number theory; summation methods; and the theorem of L. Schwarz concerning the solutions of a homogeneous convolution equation on the real line and its applications in harmonic function theory.

The Theory of the Jahn-Teller Effect: When a Boson meets a Fermion by Arnout Ceulemans
English | PDF,EPUB | 2022 | 429 Pages | ISBN : 3031095278 | 33.8 MB

This book provides a comprehensive discussion of the Jahn-Teller Effect (JTE), focusing on the boson-fermion interaction. While current research is concerned with measuring and calculating ever more sophisticated and complex manifestations of the JT effect, the present volume takes away the epicycles of the theory and focuses on the symmetry dilemma at its core. When fermions and bosons meet, they get entangled and form a new dynamic reality. According to the rules of Molecular Symmetry, this reality is limited to a small set of patterns, with degeneracy cardinalities: 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The novelty of the book is that it adopts a unique mathematical technique, known as the Bargmann-Fock representation, and treats all degeneracies in detail. So far, this method was only applied to the simplest doublet case therefore its extension to the entire range of cases offers a new unified perspective. This volume will help the reader acquire a clear understanding of the JT effect, discover its universal mechanism and it will be a great tool for researchers and graduates working on this topic.

General Topology II: Compactness, Homologies of General Spaces by A. V. Arhangel’skii
English | PDF | 1996 | 265 Pages | ISBN : 3642770320 | 47.4 MB

This volume of the Encyclopaedia consists of two independent parts. The first contains a survey of results related to the concept of compactness in general topology. It highlights the role that compactness plays in many areas of general topology. The second part is devoted to homology and cohomology theories of general spaces. Special emphasis is placed on the method of sheaf theory as a unified approach to constructions of such theories. Both authors have succeeded in presenting a wealth of material that is of interest to students and researchers in the area of topology. Each part illustrates deep connections between important mathematical concepts. Both parts reflect a certain new way of looking at well known facts by establishing interesting relationships between specialized results belonging to diverse areas of mathematics.

Computational Invariant Theory by Harm Derksen, Gregor Kemper
English | PDF | 2002 | 272 Pages | ISBN : 364207796X | 23 MB

This book is about the computational aspects of invariant theory. Of central interest is the question how the invariant ring of a given group action can be calculated. Algorithms for this purpose form the main pillars around which the book is built. There are two introductory chapters, one on Gröbner basis methods and one on the basic concepts of invariant theory, which prepare the ground for the algorithms.
