From the reviews: "The huge literature in risk theory has been carefully selected and supplemented by personal contributions of the author, many of which appear here for the first time. The result is a systematic and very readable book, which takes into account the most recent developments of the field. It will be of great interest to the actuary as well as to the statistician who wants to become familiar with the subject." Math. Reviews Vol. 43

"It is a book of fundamental importance for all interested in the application or teaching of the subject and a significant addition to the literature."

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (England) 1971

"This latest addition to the literature of risk theory is a masterful work.." Transactions, Soc of Actuaries meetings 65

The papers comprising this collection are directly or indirectly related to an important branch of mathematical physics - the mathematical theory of wave propagation and diffraction. The paper by V. M. Babich is concerned with the application of the parabolic-equation method (of Academician V. A. Fok and M. A, Leontovich) to the problem of the asymptotic behavior of eigenfunc tions concentrated in a neighborhood of a closed geodesie in a Riemannian space. The techniques used in this paper have been föund useful in solving certain problems in the theory of open resonators. The topic of G. P. Astrakhantsev's paper is similar to that of the paper by V. M. Babich. Here also the parabolic-equation method is used to find the asymptotic solution of the elasticity equations which describes Love waves concentrated in a neighborhood of some surface ray. The paper of T. F. Pankratova is concerned with finding the asymptotic behavior of th~ eigenfunc tions of the Laplace operator from the exact solution for the surface of a triaxial ellipsoid and the re gion exterior to it. The first three papers of B. G. Nikolaev are somewhat apart from the central theme of the col lection; they treat the integral transforms with respect to associated Legendre functions of first kind and their applications. Examples of such applications are the use of this transform for the solution of integral equations with symmetrie kernels and for the solution of certain problems in the theory of electrical prospecting.

arithmetic of the integers, linear algebra, an introduction to group theory, the theory of polynomial functions and polynomial equations, and some Boolean algebra. It could be supplemented, of course, by material from other chapters. Again, Course 5 (Calculus) aiscusses the differential and integral calculus more or less from the beginnings of these theories, and proceeds through functions of several real variables, functions of a complex variable, and topics of real analysis such as the implicit function theorem. We would, however, like to make a further point with regard to the appropriateness of our text in course work. We emphasized in the Introduction to the original edition that, in the main, we had in mind the reader who had already met the topics once and wished to review them in the light of his (or her) increased knowledge and mathematical maturity. We therefore believe that our book could form a suitable basis for American graduate courses in the mathematical sciences, especially those prerequisites for a Master's degree.

Dr. KURT GODEL'S sixtieth birthday (April 28, 1966) and the thirty fifth anniversary of the publication of his theorems on undecidability were celebrated during the 75th Anniversary Meeting of the Ohio Ac ademy of Science at The Ohio State University, Columbus, on April 22, 1966. The celebration took the form of a Festschrift Symposium on a theme supported by the late Director of The Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey, Dr. J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER: "Logic, and Its Relations to Mathematics, Natural Science, and Philosophy." The symposium also celebrated the founding of Section L (Mathematical Sciences) of the Ohio Academy of Science. Salutations to Dr. GODEL were followed by the reading of papers by S. F. BARKER, H. B. CURRY, H. RUBIN, G. E. SACKS, and G. TAKEUTI, and by the announcement of in-absentia papers contributed in honor of Dr. GODEL by A. LEVY, B. MELTZER, R. M. SOLOVAY, and E. WETTE. A short discussion of "The II Beyond Godel's I" concluded the session.

This book is a translation of the 6th to 8th edition of the author's Kleines Lehrbuch der Physik. The circle of readers to which it hopes to appeal and the author's purpose in writing it have been set out in the Preface to the first German edition, published in 1948. The present book consistently follows the principles of the theory of quantities, the beginnings of which date back to James C. Maxwell. This means that in all equations in this book the symbols invariably stand for physical quantities and not for the numerical values of quantities. Only then are the equations gene rally valid and independent of the choice of units used in their evaluation. The units used are always the "metric" units which have been gaining ground increasingly also in the English-speaking countries. A conversion table for some of the more important Anglo-American units is given on page XIV. I would like to record my sincere gratitude to Mr. Ewald Osers for his pains taking work in making this translation and to Mr. P. C. Banbury, Ph. D., of the Department of Physics, University of Reading, England, both for the advice he has given hirn throughout and for devising the problems specially for this edition.

This book presents recent advances, challenges, and trends in modern microalgal biotechnology. It covers microalgae genetics, bioreactors, modeling, massive scale and industrial cultivation, and environmental, social, and economic aspects of microalgal biotechnology. The book also explores the emerging knowledge about high-value bioproducts from microalgae, e.g., biofuels, biosurfactants, bioremediation, bioplastics/biopolymers, pharmaceuticals, antioxidants (anti-aging), fatty acids, polysaccharides and proteins, feed and superfoods with microalgae. The chapters will be written by prominent professors and researchers from the six inhabited continents of the world, from academic to industrial sectors.
