English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 274 Pages | ISBN : 9819963486 | 33.6 MB

This book contains chapters on a range of topics in mathematics and mathematical physics, including semigroups, algebras, operator theory and quantum mechanics, most of them have been presented at the International Conference on Semigroup, Algebras, and Operator Theory (ICSAOT-22), held at Cochin, Kerala, India, from 28–31 March 2022. It highlights the significance of semigroup theory in different areas of mathematics and delves into various themes that demonstrate the subject’s diverse nature and practical applications. One of the key features of the book is its focus on the relationship between geometric algebra and quantum mechanics. The book offers both theoretical and numerical approximation results, presenting a comprehensive overview of the subject. It covers a variety of topics, ranging from C∗-algebraic models to numerical solutions for partial differential equations.

This volume consists of refereed research and expository articles by both plenary and other speakers at the International Conference on Algebra and Applications held at Ohio University in June 2008, to honor S.K. Jain on his 70th birthday. The articles are on a wide variety of areas in classical ring theory and module theory, such as rings satisfying polynomial identities, rings of quotients, group rings, homological algebra, injectivity and its generalizations, etc. Included are also applications of ring theory to problems in coding theory and in linear algebra.

Finite-Dimensional Division Algebras over Fields by Nathan Jacobson

These algebras determine, by the Sliedderburn Theorem. the semi-simple finite dimensional algebras over a field. They lead to the definition of the Brauer group and to certain geometric objects, the Brauer-Severi varieties. Sie shall be interested in these algebras which have an involution. Algebras with involution arose first in the study of the so-called .'multiplication algebras of Riemann matrices". Albert undertook their study at the behest of Lefschetz. He solved the problem of determining these algebras. The problem has an algebraic part and an arithmetic part which can be solved only by determining the finite dimensional simple algebras over an algebraic number field. We are not going to consider the arithmetic part but will be interested only in the algebraic part. In Albert's classical book (1939). both parts are treated. A quick survey of our Table of Contents will indicate the scope of the present volume. The largest part of our book is the fifth chapter which deals with invo- torial rimple algebras of finite dimension over a field. Of particular interest are the Jordan algebras determined by these algebras with involution. Their structure is determined and two important concepts of these algebras with involution are the universal enveloping algebras and the reduced norm. Of great importance is the concept of isotopy. There are numerous applications of these concepts, some of which are quite old.

Prime Divisors and Noncommutative Valuation Theory by Hidetoshi Marubayashi , Fred Van Oystaeyen
English | PDF | 2012 | 225 Pages | ISBN : 3642311512 | 2.1 MB

Classical valuation theory has applications in number theory and class field theory as well as in algebraic geometry, e.g. in a divisor theory for curves. But the noncommutative equivalent is mainly applied to finite dimensional skewfields. Recently however, new types of algebras have become popular in modern algebra; Weyl algebras, deformed and quantized algebras, quantum groups and Hopf algebras, etc. The advantage of valuation theory in the commutative case is that it allows effective calculations, bringing the arithmetical properties of the ground field into the picture.

Semisimple Lie groups, and their algebraic analogues over fields other than the reals, are of fundamental importance in geometry, analysis, and mathematical physics. Three independent, self-contained volumes, under the general title "Lie Theory," feature survey work and original results by well-established researchers in key areas of semisimple Lie theory.

This volume has been curated from two sources: presentations from the Conference on Rings and Polynomials, Technische Universität Graz, Graz, Austria, July 19 –24, 2021, and papers intended for presentation at the Fourth International Meeting on Integer-valued Polynomials and Related Topics, CIRM, Luminy, France, which was cancelled due to the pandemic. The collection ranges widely over the algebraic, number theoretic and topological aspects of rings, algebras and polynomials. Two areas of particular note are topological methods in ring theory, and integer valued polynomials. The book is dedicated to the memory of Paul-Jean Cahen, a coauthor or research collaborator with some of the conference participants and a friend to many of the others. This collection contains a memorial article about Paul-Jean Cahen, written by his longtime research collaborator and coauthor Jean-Luc Chabert.

Resolution of Curve and Surface Singularities in Characteristic Zero by K. Kiyek , J. L. Vicente
English | PDF | 2004 | 506 Pages | ISBN : 1402020287 | 50.3 MB

The Curves The Point of View of Max Noether Probably the oldest references to the problem of resolution of singularities are found in Max Noether's works on plane curves [cf. [148], [149]]. And probably the origin of the problem was to have a formula to compute the genus of a plane curve. The genus is the most useful birational invariant of a curve in classical projective geometry. It was long known that, for a plane curve of degree n having l m ordinary singular points with respective multiplicities ri, i E {1, . . . , m}, the genus p of the curve is given by the formula = (n - l)(n - 2) _ ~ "r. (r. _ 1) P 2 2 L. . ,. •• . Of course, the problem now arises: how to compute the genus of a plane curve having some non-ordinary singularities. This leads to the natural question: can we birationally transform any (singular) plane curve into another one having only ordinary singularities? The answer is positive. Let us give a flavor (without proofs) 2 on how Noether did it • To solve the problem, it is enough to consider a special kind of Cremona trans formations, namely quadratic transformations of the projective plane. Let ~ be a linear system of conics with three non-collinear base points r = {Ao, AI, A }, 2 and take a projective frame of the type {Ao, AI, A ; U}.
