In celebration of the late Jerry Garcia's 70th birthday, David Grisman unveils a new collection of nine previously unreleased Garcia/Grisman alternate takes in the new high-definition (24 bit, 96 khz) format. This HD release affords listeners an opportunity to enjoy "Grateful Dawg" music in a sonically superior format with different versions of "The Thrill Is Gone," "Friend of the Devil," "Russian Lullaby," "Arabia" and five others, providing insight into how these two legendary American musicians approached this material. According to producer Grisman, "Our sessions were always informal, and all of these takes are exceptional performances. They are just as vibrant as the original selected masters and perhaps even better!"

Picking up where they left off with 1995's duet recording Tone Poems II, mandolin master David Grisman and guitar great Martin Taylor blithely saunter through a dozen jazz staples. Taylor's playing boasts a blues-soaked intensity and insouciant fire that isn't normally associated with the willowy and refined soloist, while Grisman showcases a wide variety of adventurous ideas, but at no time do the issues seem forced. The sympathetic and delicate rhythmic support of bassist Jim Kerwin and drummer George Marsh contributes to the air of easygoing delight. Taylor even picks up the mandolin himself on a hidden "keepsake".

Their musical history dates back to college days at New York University circa 1963 when the Greenwich Village folk revival was in its' heyday. They made their first recording together as members of the Even Dozen Jug Band with future luminaries Maria Muldaur, Stefan Grossman and others. The rest, of course is musical history. John Sebastian became lead singer and songwriter of one of America's most popular bands - the Lovin' Spoonful and David Grisman spearheaded an acoustic music revolution with his genre-defying "Dawg" music. Finally, after a 40+ year hiatus, their paths crossed again at a benefit concert in Mill Valley, California. After this mutually enjoyable evening of spontaneous music, it became obvious that they would continue collaborating and the result is Satisfied - a stunning collection of acoustic duets featuring traditional folk tunes, blues, classy instrumentals and originals by these two legendary masters.

Legend has it that a pizza delivery boy lifted Jerry Garcia's cassette tape of two evenings worth of very special music from his kitchen counter, thus paving its way into underground tape trading circles and giving a handle to these incredible performances. Now at last, from the vaults of Dawg Studios comes the sonically superb official release of this historic jam session, the only meeting of guitar greats Jerry Garcia and Tony Rice, introduced to each other by their mutual friend and musical associate, mandolinist/ producer David Grisman. The Pizza Tapes capture these virtuosos at a rare moment in time, free of pressure, hassles or any given agenda other than making music and having plenty of fun.

This 1973 release features what is essentially a Bay Area bar band led by Merl Saunders (keyboards) and Jerry Garcia (guitar) during the latter musician's downtime from the Grateful Dead. Along with the two subsequent "encore" volumes, Live at Keystone includes performances drawn from the quartet's July 10-11, 1973, run in the intimate confines of Keystone Korners in Berkeley. With the support of Bill Vitt(percussion) and John Kahn (bass), the pair jams their way through an eclectic assortment of covers and a few equally inspired original instrumentals.

David Grisman's musical interests have been so varied that he is impossible to categorize stylistically, one of the reasons he has long described his playing everywhere as "Dawg Music". This is a bit of an unusual outing, as it consists of a trio with bluegrass/folk guitarist/vocalist Jim Hurst, Grisman (mostly on mandolin), and his son Samson on bass.

Long before he developed his unique style of "Dawg Music," mandolinist David Grisman was steeped in bluegrass, though he was even stretching its conceived boundaries early in his professional career. This album combines live recordings from 1966 and one track from 1973, with the supporting musicians including Del McCoury (guitar and vocals) and Jerry McCoury (bass), with banjo player Bill Keith and guitarist Artie Rose added on selected tracks…

Throughout his career, mandolinist David Grisman has performed music that crosses between many boundaries, from "new acoustic" folk to bluegrass and swing-oriented jazz. This set features Grisman's string group (which also includes violinist Darol Anger, Mike Marshall on mandolin, guitar and violin, Mark O'Connor on violin and guitar, and bassist Rob Wasserman) playing six of Grisman's diverse originals, an obscure tune, and a brief rendition of John Coltrane's "Naima." The music is excellent, but Grisman's more jazz-oriented projects would be in the future.

This historic one-night event honoured Jerry Garcia, one of the most influential musicians and cultural icons of our time. Among the performers celebrating Garcia are Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, along with Eric Church, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Frampton, Jorma Kaukonen, Los Lobos, Grace Potter and several others.

In 1976 the newly-formed David Grisman Quintet recorded the first album of dawg music, an acoustic blend of many styles and traditions. Now forty years later that music continues to evolve with this first recording of the David Grisman Sextet. Many faces, hearts and hands have changed but the musical vision is still intact - the Dawg's own music.
