In 1729, the nobleman and poet Annibale Marchese (1686–1753) published “Tragedie Cristiane,” a remarkable collection of ten Italian plays. Influenced by Racine, Corneille, Voltaire, and the classical tradition, these innovative plays are deeply rooted in Jesuit theatrical practice. To realise his vision, Marchese recruited ten of the most celebrated composers of his time—all masters of the so-called Neapolitan School. Their strophic arias, often accompanied by obbligato harpsichord, reflect each composer’s individual style. Complementing them are previously unknown instrumental dances.

The baroque ensemble Oslo Circles is back at the Opera with its brand new concert program of captivating, surprising, slightly crazy (or completely insane?) Italian and Austrian baroque music from the 17th century. After the wait through the pandemic, Oslo Circles is now ready for a big dose of joy and a bit of madness, and tonight's imaginative music describes dogs, cats, chickens, a fencing school (with real sabers!), a Turkish Janissary, the ballet of philosophers and madness, and a celebration at an inn, to name a few.

On its new CD from BR-KLASSIK, the Bavarian Radio Chorus, directed by Howard Arman, presents Christmas music from Italy. With his Lauda per la natività del Signore, Ottorino Respighi modernised the medieval nativity play of the same name by the religious lyricist Jacopone da Todi. He had already explored art forms of the past in adaptations of early music, re-creations and free works based on Gregorian chants. In this piece, he assigned the medieval verses to three soloists - the angel (soprano), the Virgin Mary (mezzo-soprano), and the shepherd (tenor) - as well as a chamber choir. Accompanied by selected woodwind instruments reminiscent of the music of Italian shepherds, and by four-handed piano and triangle, the miracle of Christmas is brought to life in a simple yet impressive way.

Needing no introduction, Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth has championed the trumpet repertoire amongst audiences on all six continents, meriting the highest critical praise for her soulful, lyrical sound and collaborative approach to music-making. Her new album 'Echoes - Trumpet Concertos by Arutiunian, Penderecki and Weinberg, Tine is accompanied by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Petr Popelka.

Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks’s Castillo Interior was composed in remembrance of the mystic St. Teresa of Avila, a mythologised 16th-century nun who documented her own ecstatic mystical experiences in her autobiography, The Life of Teresa of Jesus, as well as her books, The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection. A meditative piece commemorating a rare 16th-century woman, published and therefore remembered by history.

After two acclaimed disco-funk albums in Prism (2022) and Silver (2023), female Brooklyn-based trio Say She She—named in tribute to Nile Rodgers—return with Cut & Rewind, a record made for the dancefloor that remains socially conscious in its message. The prolific and ever-inspired Nya Gazelle Brown, Sabrina Cunningham, and Piya Malik joined forces once again with Orgone's Dan Hastie (keyboards), Sam Halterman (drums), Dale Jennings (bass), and Sergio Rios (guitar) at Killion Sound Studios in Los Angeles. Often brief, the recording sessions were driven by spontaneity and live energy.
