Description
Thermal analysis of building envelope including solar heat gain, and thermal zoning.
HVAC load estimation using the ASHRAE method as well as commercial software for residential and
commercial buildings. HVAC system configuration both all-air and air-water systems. Air-distribution
systems and psychrometric analysis. Design of ducts and piping systems. Refrigeration and Absorption
systems including heat pumps, chillers, and boilers. Selection of HVAC equipment.

Major Course Objective
This is a hands-on type of design course with a major focus on HVAC load calculation using computer
software published by well-known air conditioning companies. The focus is also on analyzing various options
in air conditioning systems leading to the selection of available products in the market. At the successful
completion of the course, the students will be in a position to seek direct employment with A/C design
firms and perform the duties of an HVAC design engineer.
