    Radiowave Propagation in Satellite Communications

    Radiowave Propagation in Satellite Communications

Radiowave Propagation in Satellite Communications by Louis J. Ippolito
    English | PDF | 1986 | 251 Pages | ISBN : 9401170290 | 16.5 MB

Radiowave Propagation in Communications was written with two basic objec tives: (l) to present an up-to-date review of the major radiowave propagation phenomena which hinder reliable space communications, and (2) to describe how these propagation phenomena affect the design and performance of satellite communications systems. Earth-orbiting satellites are employed extensively for the relay of information in a vast array of telecommunications, meteorological, government, and sci entific applications. Satellite systems rely on the transmission of radiowaves to and from the satellite and are dependent on the propagation characteristics of the transmission path, primarily the earth's atmosphere. Radiowave propagation thus plays a very important part in the design and ultimate performance of space communications systems. This book presents, for the first time, the meshing in a single publication of the fundamentals of radiowave propagation factors with a discussion of the practical consequences of these factors on satellite communications systems. Two major subfie1ds are involved in this book. Radiowave propagation, which is basically applied electromagnetic theory, provides the theory and an alytical tools for the first several chapters. Later chapters then apply propagation effects to the field of electrical engineering involved with satellite communi cations. The material progresses from the essential aspects of radiowave prop agation to the application of practical methods and techniques in the design and performance of satellite communications systems.

    Satellite Communication Systems Design

    Satellite Communication Systems Design

Satellite Communication Systems Design by Sebastiano Tirró
    English | PDF | 1993 | 851 Pages | ISBN : 0306441470 | 81.2 MB

Writing a comprehensive book on satellite communications requires the com mand of many technical disciplines and the availability of up-to-date information on international recommendations, system architectures, and equipment stand ards. It is therefore necessary to involve many authors, each possessing a good level of knowledge in a particular discipline. The problem of using a coherent and unambiguous set of definitions and basic terms has been solved by including in the book all the background information needed for understanding satellite communication systems, without any major reference to other textbooks specializing in particular disciplines. The obvious consequence of this approach has been the large size of the book, with the advantages, however, of practically complete independence from other books, more systematic discussion of the subject matter, and better readability. After the required background information, emphasis has been placed on the discussion of techniques and system design criteria rather than on specific equipment implementation or description of particular systems. The book may be divided in five parts as follows: • The first five chapters provide most of the required background information. • Chapter 6 is an introductory outline of satellite communication systems. • Chapters 7 to 13 deal with the various aspects of technical system design. • Chapter 14 discusses system economics. • Chapter 15 provides a brief insight into some foreseeable future develop ments of satellite communications.

Satellite Systems for Personal and Broadband Communications

Satellite Systems for Personal and Broadband Communications by Erich Lutz , Markus Werner , Axel Jahn
    English | PDF | 2000 | 437 Pages | ISBN : 3642641016 | 35.8 MB

The important role that satellites play in the field of communications will be manifested by a large number of new satellite systems to be implemented within the next few years. These new systems will basically belong to two categories: (i) satellite networks for mobile/personal communications, mainly with handheld terminals, and (ii) satellite networks for broadband multimedia communications, mainly for fixed but also for portable and mobile terminals. This book gives an overview of both families of satellite systems. In Part I, the basics of geostationary and non-geostationary satellite constellations are dealt with, as well as the principles of satellite communications. Part II deals with satellite systems for mobile/personal communications and ad dresses various aspects of networking (multiple access, cell structure, routing, etc.); it also deals with technology, regulation, and financing. Part III is ded icated to future satellite systems for broadband communications (Internet, multimedia) and discusses satellite-specific aspects of broadband communi cations, in particular on the basis of ATM and TCP /IP. A survey of existing and planned satellite systems completes the book. The authors of this book are scientists at the German Aerospace Center, DLR (Deutsches Zentrum fiir Luft- und Raumfahrt) and work in the Digital Networks group of the Institute for Communications and Navigation.

Gyrotrons: High-Power Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology

    Gyrotrons: High-Power Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology by M. V. Kartikeyan , E. Borie , M. K. A. Thumm
    English | PDF | 2004 | 233 Pages | ISBN : 3540402004 | 20.8 MB

Gyrotron oscillators (gyrotrons) are capable of providing hundreds of kilo watts of power at microwave and millimetric wavelengths. From their con ception in the late fifties until their successful development for various ap plications, gyrotrons have come a long way technologically and made an ir reversible impact on both users and developers. The possible applications of high power millimeter and sub-millimeter waves from gyrotrons and their variants (gyro-devices) span a wide range of technologies. The plasma physics community has already taken advantage of the recent advances of gyrotrons in the areas of RF plasma production, heating, non-inductive current drive, plasma stabilization and active plasma diagnostics for magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion research, such as lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) (8 G Hz), electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) (28-170 G Hz), elec tron cyclotron current drive (ECCD), collective Thomson scattering (CTS) and heat-wave propagation experiments. Other important applications of gy rotrons are electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) discharges for the generation of multi-charged ions and soft X-rays, as well as industrial materials process ing and plasma chemistry. Submillimeter wave gyrotrons are employed in high frequency, broadband electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Additional future applications await the development of novel high power gyro-amplifiers and devices for high resolution radar ranging and imaging in atmospheric and planetary science as well as deep space and specialized satellite communications and RF drivers for next generation high gradient linear accelerators (supercolliders).
