Numerical simulation and modelling of electric circuits and semiconductor devices are of primal interest in today's high technology industries. At the Oberwolfach Conference more than forty scientists from around the world, in­ cluding applied mathematicians and electrical engineers from industry and universities, presented new results in this area of growing importance. The contributions to this conference are presented in these proceedings. They include contributions on special topics of current interest in circuit and device simulation, as well as contributions that present an overview of the field. In the semiconductor area special lectures were given on mixed finite element methods and iterative procedures for the solution of large linear systems. For three dimensional models new discretization procedures including software packages were presented. Con­ nections between semiconductor equations and the Boltzmann equation were shown as well as relations to the quantum transport equation. Other issues discussed in this area include the design of simulation programs for semiconductors, vectorcomputers, and interface problems in several dimensions.

While wavelets have since their discovery mainly been applied to problems in signal analysis and image compression, their analytic power has more and more also been recognized for problems in Numerical Analysis. Together with the functional analytic framework for different differential and integral quations, one has been able to conceptu­ ally discuss questions which are relevant for the fast numerical solution of such problems: preconditioning issues, derivation of stable discretizations, compression of fully popu­ lated matrices, evaluation of non-integer or negative norms, and adaptive refinements based on A-posteriori error estimators. This research monograph focusses on applying wavelet methods to elliptic differential equations. Particular emphasis is placed on the treatment of the boundary and the boundary conditions. Moreover, a control problem with an elliptic boundary problem as contraint serves as an example to show the conceptual strengths of wavelet techniques for some of the above mentioned issues. At this point, I would like to express my gratitude to several people before and during the process of writing this monograph. Most of all, I wish to thank Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Dahmen to whom I personally owe very much and with whom I have co-authored a large part of my work. Hundreds of novel and innovative computer algebra "recipes" will enable readers starting at the second year undergraduate level to easily and rapidly solve and explore most problems they encounter in their classical mechanics studies. Using the powerful computer algebra system MAPLE (Release 8) - no prior knowledge of MAPLE is presumed - the relevant command structures are explained on a need-to-know basis as the recipes are developed. This new problem-solving guide can serve in the classroom or for self-study, for reference, or as a text for an on-line course.
