In this revised edition of our book we retained its concept: The main emp- sis is placed on the fundamental principles of heat and mass transfer and their application to practical problems of process modelling and the apparatus design. Like the ?rst edition, the second edition contains ?ve chapters and several appendices, particularly a compilation of thermophysical property data needed for the solution of problems. Changes are made in those chapters presenting heat and mass transfer correlations based on theoretical results or experimental ?ndings. They were adapted to the most recent state of our knowledge. Some of the worked examples, which should help to deepen the comprehension of the text, were revised or updated as well. The compilation of the thermophysical property data was revised and adapted to the present knowledge. Solving problems is essential for a sound understanding and for relating pr- ciples to real engineering situations. Numerical answers and hints to the solution of problems are given in the ?nal appendix. The new edition also enabled us to correct printing errors and mistakes. In preparing the new edition we were assisted by Jens K¨ orber, who helped us to submit a printable version of the manuscript to the publisher. We owe him sincere thanks. This excellent book highlights all aspects of the analysis and design of buildings subject to impact, explosion and fire. It is a definitive reference book and contains 10 chapters from a wide international prospective. Three-dimensional finite element and discrete element techniques are included. They are applied to buildings such as the World Trade Center (WTC Twin Towers) and the Federal Building in Oklahoma on the basis of the designers drawings, data and other information. Many small case studies are also included. The book has a comprehensive bibliography and a large appendix providing background analysis and computer subroutines of recently developed programs.

The numerical simulation of combustion processes in internal combustion engines, including also the formation of pollutants, has become increasingly important in the recent years, and today the simulation of those processes has already become an indispensable tool when - veloping new combustion concepts. While pure thermodynamic models are well-established tools that are in use for the simulation of the transient behavior of complex systems for a long time, the phenomenological models have become more important in the recent years and have also been implemented in these simulation programs. In contrast to this, the thr- dimensional simulation of in-cylinder combustion, i. e. the detailed, integrated and continuous simulation of the process chain injection, mixture formation, ignition, heat release due to combustion and formation of pollutants, has been significantly improved, but there is still a number of challenging problems to solve, regarding for example the exact description of s- processes like the structure of turbulence during combustion as well as the appropriate choice of the numerical grid. While chapter 2 includes a short introduction of functionality and operating modes of internal combustion engines, the basics of kinetic reactions are presented in chapter 3. In chapter 4 the physical and chemical processes taking place in the combustion chamber are described. Ch- ter 5 is about phenomenological multi-zone models, and in chapter 6 the formation of poll- ants is described.

Free Convective Heat Transfer is a thorough survey of various kinds of free-convective flows and heat transfer. Reference data are accompanied by a large number of photographs originating from different optical visualization methods illustrating the different types of flow. The formulas derived from numerical and analytical investigations are valuable tools for engineering calculations. They are written in their most compact and general form in order to allow for an extensive range of different variants of boundary and initial conditions, which, in turn, leads to a wide applicability to different flow types. Some specific engineering problems are solved in the book as exemplary applications of these formulas.
