Biotremology: Physiology, Ecology, and Evolution by Peggy S. M. Hill
English | EPUB | 2022 | 569 Pages | ISBN : 3030974189 | 57.3 MB

Biotremology is a new and emerging discipline in biological sciences that covers all aspects of behavior associated with substrate-borne mechanical waves. This volume provides state-of-the-art reviews and technical contributions from leading experts and invited younger researchers on topics from signal production and transmission to perception in its ecological context. Reviews about the knowledge of well-studied groups are complemented with perspectives on the study of less-explored groups or contexts. Special attention is given to practical issues in measuring substrate-borne vibrations as well as to applied biotremology. The book appeals to all those interested in communication and vibrational behavior.

Experiments in Animal Behaviour: Cutting-Edge Research at Trifling Cost by Raghavendra Gadagkar

In this book, I will introduce the reader to the science of ethology, somewhat indirectly by describing simple experiments, both old and new, designed to understand how and why animals behave the way they do. My emphasis will be on the design of the experiments and my goal will be to motivate readers not only to think about the design but also to come up with alternatives and improvements. Motivated readers can indeed replicate some of these experiments even if they end up replacing the study animal or the behaviours of interest with their own favourite choices. In this chapter, I describe how Niko Tinbergen – Nobel Laureate and one of the founding fathers of ethology (the science of animal behaviour) – designed remarkably simple experiments to successfully understand how digger wasps find their own nests in a complex habitat also consisting nests built by other wasps.
