Looking to explore the world of game development? Look no further than Unreal Engine 5, one of the most exciting and powerful game engines available for free. This book is your guide to getting started with Unreal Engine, taking you step-by-step through the process of downloading the software, setting up your project, creating a simple menu, and launching your game. Along the way, you'll get an introduction to blueprints and learn how to package your game for distribution.
Book 1 sets up the environment for a Sidescroller Game. A Sidescroller Game is one of the best types of games for beginners to learn in game creation because my method of teaching this type of game gets you up and running fast. A side-scrolling game, or sidescroller, is a type of video game where the gameplay occurs from a side view, with the game world moving horizontally across the screen. Players control a character or object that moves from left to right, facing various challenges and obstacles as they progress through levels or stages.
The book starts at the beginning: Setting up the Level 1 stage, getting your character running on the X-axis, then creating a simple menu and connecting the menu to Level 1 of your game. You will create an empty level 1 first and then create the buttons and make the menu live so when you click on the buttons, Level 1 will open. Lastly, you will then learn the packaging procedure where you pack up the game and prepare it for distribution. This process will take three hours or less to complete and is what my students create Day 1 of the university course I teach.
But this book isn't just about getting started – it's about setting you up for success. With clear instructions and helpful images, this book will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to move on to more complex projects. And with plenty of room for experimentation and exploration, you'll have the freedom to create the game of your dreams.
So if you're looking for a comprehensive, hands-on guide to beginning your journey with Unreal Engine, this is the book for you. Just be aware that it's not available in printed form or as a PDF download – it's designed for those who want a truly interactive, step-by-step learning experience. So what are you waiting for? Let's get started on your game development journey today!
