The stronger our self-esteem, the more confident we feel in our abilities and the better equipped us to handle life’s challenges. Unfortunately, most of us have been conditioned to have low self-esteem since childhood. As a result, we often focus on our flaws instead of celebrating all that makes us unique, valuable individuals.

A positive outlook on one's capabilities is self-confidence. It signifies that you have confidence in yourself, know your worth, and accept responsibility for your actions. You have a healthy self-awareness and an optimistic outlook. You can create and achieve reasonable goals, communicate effectively, and take constructive feedback in stride.

Conversely, if you lack self-confidence, you may struggle to trust people, be docile or obedient, and struggle to believe in yourself. You can be sensitive to criticism and feel inferior to others. Whether or not you can muster a sense of self-assurance could be context-dependent. For example, you might have much self-assurance in your academic abilities but not your interpersonal skills.

A person's level of self-confidence, whether high or low, depends mostly on how they perceive themselves to be rather than how they are. Your self-perception is made up of your thoughts, and thoughts might be wrong.
There are several potential causes of low self-confidence, including being raised in a harsh and critical atmosphere, experiencing isolation from loved ones for the first time, severe evaluations of oneself, or being overly fearful of making mistakes. In addition, people with poor self-confidence typically have errors in their reasoning and distorted memories of past events, which contribute to their negative views of themselves.
