German pianist Julius Asal’s upcoming second DG album Siena Tapes features a selection of pieces by Ravel, a new composition by the producer of the album, Christian Badzura, as well as three new improvisational pieces Cascades I-III, written by Asal himself. Originally conceived as a 150th-anniversary tribute to Ravel, the album grew into a very personal project during the writing and recording process. “In a miraculous way,” he notes, “Ravel had access to all sound colours. Even his more subtle works for piano contain shades and forces that you would usually find only in a complex symphony.” All of the pieces were recorded at American record producer Rick Rubin’s Chapel in Siena in September 2024.

What began as a one-off commission for the 2022 Moldejazz Festival has evolved into one of Norway’s most intriguing new projects. Orbits, the brainchild of Lars Horntveth, producer Erlend Mokkelbost, and vocalist Natalie Sandtorv, finds its full stride on their debut album Blood Red Sky, a genre-blurring follow-up to last year’s more cryptic Bad Mantras.

Family is an album by Senegalese percussionist and singer Aba Diop and his band, The Yermande Family. It is a fusion of traditional Senegalese rhythms, particularly the sabar style, with modern influences such as jazz and afrobeat. It is built on polyrhythmic percussion, powerful Wolof-language vocals, and groovy bass lines. Thematically, the album is dedicated to family, unity and cultural heritage, a theme reflected in both the title and the collaborative nature of the band's work.

Berlin’s own Delfonic kicks off a very special series of Roy Ayers reworks with this four-track EP on BBE Music.
