Yuhan Su's "OVER the MOONs" represents a quantum leap in both scale and ambition, doubling the size of her usual ensemble to create an octet album that prioritizes sonic layers over traditional storytelling. Composed primarily during her February 2024 residency at Ucross and premiered at The Jazz Gallery, the album creates what Su describes as "a pool where the band feels free to swim in their own directions"—multiple musical horizons that flow, grow, and eventually converge or clash with electrifying intensity. The production showcases Su's evolution as both composer and technologist, featuring her pickup-equipped vibraphone run through distortion, pitch-shifting, and delay pedals, while collaborator Shinya Lin's custom Max/MSP sensor devices enable real-time gestural control of electronic processing. Recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely at Bunker Studio, "Over the Moons" on Endectomorph Music stands as Su's most sophisticated statement yet—a work where individual creative freedom and collective musical architecture achieve perfect, complex balance.
