Engstfeld - Plümer - Weiss - Direct to Disc (2025) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

At the beginning of the 1980s, a saxophone-bass-drums trio started out in German jazz clubs and caused a furore for a decade with their line-up without a harmonising instrument. Wolfgang Engstfeld (tenor saxophone), Gunnar Plümer (bass) and Peter Weiss (drums) followed their very own style with their improvised music, without denying their deep roots in Afro-American jazz. Engstfeld/Plümer/Weiss possessed this flair for gripping swing and had an unmistakable feeling for sketchy, harmonic improvisations drawn into the acoustic space. The three of them usually played straight-ahead, but were happy to let the reins slip when the flow of their joint improvisation made it necessary.
Four Engstfeld/Plümer/Weiss productions were released by Nabel: "Direct To Disc" in 1983 and "Drivin'" in 1985, as well as two more with the American trumpeter Randy Brecker.
The saxophonist Wolfgang Engstfeld, who died in 2023, was one of the outstanding German soloists for many years.
We have now remastered and re-released the analogue tape of the direct-to-disc recording from 1985.
