Sometimes artists suddenly emerge from the past and achieve a significance that no one ever expected. David Axelrod is one such artist. His classic productions for Lou Rawls, Cannonball Adderley, his arrangements for the Electric Prunes and his own solo albums created a style of huge swaths of drums, dragging bass lines and spooky strings. Until recently, that didn't really mean anything. Then the sample-obsessed hip-hop community discovered him and championed him, and his records went from landing on bargain shelves to fetching handsome sums. People like the Beatnuts and De La Soul found his records irresistible, and DJ Shadow liked him so much that he had him work on remixes for the UNKLE project on Mo' Wax.

HEAVY AXE is one of the few Axelrod albums that is the holy grail for collectors of his work. In many ways, it is his most complete and best work. Everything Counts is a classic Axelrod album with big strings and classic motifs on a funky backbeat, while Mucho Chupar is a sizzling piece of funk that won't scare away the faint of heart. For a change of pace, there's one of the best versions of You're So Vain you'll ever hear. Stephanie Spruill's vocals play seductively around Axelrod's arrangements.
