Bud Powell, one of the giants of jazz piano, changed the way virtually all post-swing pianists play their instrument. He dispensed with the striding of the left hand, which was previously considered essential, and used the left hand to play chords at irregular intervals. His right hand often played fast single-note lines, essentially transferring Charlie Parker's vocabulary to the piano (although he developed in parallel with "Bird").

According to Herbie Hancock, Bud Powell was "the foundation from which the entire building of modern jazz piano was created" and for Hampton Hawes "the greatest be-bop pianist in the world".

Although his life was short and full of problems (1924 - 1966), Bud found a warm welcome and some comfort and rest in the years he spent in Europe, especially in Paris, from 1959 to 1963, which probably extended his life a little, but even then Powell spent part of the years 1962-1963 in the hospital. He returned to New York in 1964, disappeared after a few concerts and did not survive in 1966.

The previously unreleased recordings that make up this album are from March and August 1962 from the Danish Radio Concert Hall and the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. However much the man was mentally and physically battered, here is the clear evidence of his genius, which is more intact than is commonly believed.
