"Inverted: The Music of Phil Broadhurst" is a tribute to the late New Zealand jazz pianist Phil Broadhurst with new arrangements of his original compositions and an accompanying album. Phil Broadhurst was a legendary, award-winning pianist and composer, bandleader, educator and promoter of jazz in New Zealand. At his suggestion, the Auckland Jazz Orchestra recorded a collection of works from his glorious career.
Phil Broadhurst's influence on jazz in New Zealand can hardly be overestimated. As a pianist, composer and bandleader, broadcaster and educator at the New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī, he championed original kiwi music and musicians and was awarded the ONZM in 2001 for his services to jazz music. The inverted recording sessions started with Phil's enthusiastic participation, but unfortunately he passed away in 2020 before they were completed.
The Auckland Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece big band for contemporary jazz, consists of a number of experienced professionals and young talents, including arrangers Tim Atkinson, Mike Booth and Andrew Hall, all of whom had played with or studied with Phil.
As Norman Meehan notes in the liner Notes, Broadhurst was a man driven by melodies, and these could be tender and thoughtful, more measured and considered than the jazz world sometimes wishes.
