For her third album Jennifer Hudson’s voice is a thrilling thing set in a workaday, loosely 70s-inspired “urban” blot of backing. There are highs – a belting gospel-house duet with fellow US midwesterner R Kelly, and an album closer with a Whitney-tight grip on the heartstrings, written for her murdered mother. (There are lows too – Iggy Azalea features.) There’s always a gooey pleasure to hearing her sing, but you’d hope someone launched through gospel to the American Idol finals and an Oscar win might find better material in an R&B world thundering with great songwriters.

Over the years Johnny Mathis has recorded a number of Christmas albums and this is a very good example the best of them. Recorded in Hollywood in 1986,a good 27 years after recording his first festive album in New York City with Percy Faith,this album does not contain any traditional Christmas carols but rather an excellent selection of modern pop oriented Christmas songs.This is a lovely album with an excellent choice of songs and the talents of such great arrangers as Henry Mancini,Jeremy Lubbock and Ray Ellis are used here to great effect. All the orchestrations are gorgeous and well balanced and the sound is wonderful.

The talented organist and harpsichordist Maude Gratton is an artist constantly seeking perfection. A graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, she trained with such great masters as Pierre Hantaï (harpsichord) and Louis Robilliard (organ), as well as with Olivier Baumont, Blandine Rannou, Kenneth Weiss, Michel Bouvard, Olivier Latry, and Olivier Trachier.

"Tonight" was originally released in 1984 in Italy, and a year later under license in Germany and Spain. All the 3 releases were pressed on vinyl only. The original recordings were waiting for over 25 years to be released officially on CD. Along this time the "Tonight" album became a legend and number one on most of Italo Fans' favourite records lists. In fact it is a true Italian synth pop classic which made way for the other artists and ruled the synth disco scene not only in Italy. The whole Europe was enchanted by the cold and sweet electronic sound of Savage, including the UK based Pet Shop Boys, who mention his huge hit "Don't Cry Tonight" in one of the interviews.

2014 release, the sixth solo album from the multiple Grammy-nominated R&B superstar. The pairing of the two works on this album is unique in that one comes from the dawn, the other from the dusk of Ludwig van Beethoven’s career. Indeed, whereas the composer wrote the Quintet for winds and piano, op.16, when he was only 26 – the talented young man also excelled as a successful pianist – he did not finish his String Quartet, op.130, until a year before his death. The Edding Quartet proposes here the original version of the work, with the Grosse Fuge, op.133, as finale.

Millie Jackson was a consistent presence on the American R'n'B charts throughout the 70s and 80s, scoring several top 10 hits and receiving multiple Grammy nominations. That all came to a screeching halt, however, with the release of 1989's "Back To The Shit". The fabulous cover caused a scandal but it was the album's shocking subject matter that triggered the biggest backlash. Millie's gutter mouth and saucy lyrics had made her famous but the general consensus was that she had finally gone too far by talking about getting head from lesbians, dildos, morning flatulence, oral sex, douching and "starchy" toilet seats! Time has taken the edge off some of the material but "Back To The Shit" is still outrageous even by today's standards.
