Im Oktober 1996 wurde auf einem Baugelände südlich des Museums der Stadt Qingzhou in der Provinz Shandong ein grosses unterirdisches Depot mit buddhistischen Skulpturen entdeckt. Die Mitarbeiter des Museums konnten in einer Notgrabung über 400 Figuren bergen, die aus einer Zeitspanne stammen, die sieben Dynastien umfasst, von der Nördlichen Wei (386-) bis zur Nördlichen Song (-1279). Der überwiegende Teil der Skulpturen stammt allerdings aus der zweiten Hälfte des 6. Jahrhunderts. Auf vielen hat sich die Vergoldung und die Farbfassung erstaunlich gut erhalten. Der kraftvolle Glanz des Goldes und die farbenprächtige Bemalung lassen die ursprüngliche Schönheit der Steinskulpturen voll zu Tage treten. Darüber hinaus ist die Steinmetzelarbeit von vorzüglicher Qualität und sind die Variationen der Figurentypen äusserst reich.

In October 1996 a large underground depot with Buddhist sculptures was discovered at a construction site south of the Museum of the City of Qingzhou City in Shandong Province. Museum staff were able to salvage more than 400 statues in an emergency excavation that come from a time span that includes seven dynasties from the Northern Wei (386 -) to the Northern Song (-1279). The majority of the sculptures, however, comes from the second half of the 6th century. On many of them the original gilding and paintwork has been remarkably well preserved. The powerful luster of gold and the colorful paintings cause the original beauty of the stone sculptures to come fully to light. In addition, the sculptural work is of excellent quality, and are the variations of the figure types are extremely rich.
