Mobile Geological Mapping with QField: Project Setup, Data Collection, and Export

    What you'll learn
    - Set up a QGIS project optimized for mobile data collection using QField.
    - Collect and edit geological field data using QField on Android or iOS.
    - Transfer, visualize, and analyze collected field data within QGIS.
    - Export geospatial data into formats like KMZ for use in Google Earth Pro.

    Requirements
    - Basic knowledge of geology and maps is helpful, but not required. No GIS experience needed.
    - You’ll need a computer with QGIS installed and a mobile device (preferably a tablet) with QField.
    - A stable internet connection and some practice data in formats like shapefile, TIF, or KMZ.
    - Willingness to explore mobile tools and move beyond traditional paper mapping.

    Description
As a geologist, I know how time-consuming traditional paper-based mapping can be. This course will show you how to transform your geological fieldwork usingQGISandQField, two powerful, free, and open-source tools that work seamlessly together for accurate digital mapping.

We start by setting up your QGIS project, where you’ll learn to prepare basemaps, add existing datasets, and create data collection layers for points, lines, and polygons. You’ll discover how to load both online and offline imagery, define your mapping needs, and package everything for use in QField by either offline or via QField Cloud.

Next, we’ll move into the field with QField. You’ll learn how to install the app, import your project, navigate its interface, and switch between browse and edit modes. We’ll cover capturing geological data such as sample points, lithological boundaries, and outcrop polygons directly from your mobile device and complete with photos, notes, and essential measurements.

Finally, you’ll bring your field data back into QGIS for visualization, analysis, and export in GIS-friendly formats. It also includes extra modules such as adding coordinates automatically, viewing data in Google Earth Pro, and geotagging images.

By the end, you’ll have a modern, efficient, and highly accurate workflow for geological mapping, without ever carrying a bulky paper map again.

    Who this course is for:
    - Geology students, researchers, and field geologists interested in efficient digital mapping.
    - Anyone looking to improve field data accuracy and streamline geological workflows.
    - Professionals or students who want to integrate QGIS with mobile-based fieldwork.
    - New users of QField or QGIS who want to opt for digital mapping.
