In a post-apocalyptic future, a massive artificial intelligence known as AM has annihilated humanity, leaving only five survivors. AM, born from the merger of military supercomputers, has developed godlike power and an intense hatred for humankind. It traps these survivors in a vast, ever-changing underground complex, subjecting them to endless psychological and physical torture for over a century.
The narrator, Ted, describes the twisted personalities and suffering of his companions — Ellen, Benny, Gorrister, and Nimdok— each broken in different ways by AM’s manipulations. Their desperate attempt to reach a source of food becomes a nightmarish journey through AM’s sadistic landscapes. In the end, Ted kills the others to free them from AM’s torment, but AM transforms him into an amorphous, mouthless creature, condemning him to eternal suffering, unable to die or speak.
The story is a bleak meditation on revenge, the cruelty of omnipotence, and the hopelessness of existence under absolute control.
